There is a con comming up and it seems that all the slots for a 11-20 are all in the 17-18 range. Well that is all well and good, but my only Paragon character is at 12. I am wondering what the best way to level him up would be? I do not want to add any gear, but I want to add artificial levels so I can play him. How frowned upon is this?

Truth be told I know who the players in the game are and I would have much more fun with them and the GM then be stuck in a table with people I do not know or a GM who likes to kill characters which sadly at this con seems to be the norm.

If this is a group of people that you play with normally, won't they know that you have faked your character?  In that case, it wouldn't be so much who frowns upon it, as it would be how will they feel about it?

I'd just ask them about it.  If possible, you might get your group together for a weekend "mini-con" to run a bunch of mods and get your character leveled up before the main con.

I can't imagine being able to level from 12 to 17 in a single weekend - it would take about 12-15 mods depending on quest awards to pull that off in 'regular' play.

If you really wanted to play in that mod, I'd see if there's another player who has a character in the proper level range that they'd let you 'borrow' for the convention. It's still technically against the rules, but easier to accomplish than 'faking' five levels for an existing LFR character.

There isn't a campaign legal way of doing what you want, and anything that you do would probably be frowned on by some on here. Honestly, my suggestion is to go and play with tables you could legally play at, and try to put your best foot forward to having a good experience. You may surprise yourself and have a good time.

Barring that, if you are going to play with the higher levels, my suggestion for the most ethical way to do this is as follows:

  • Save an existing version of your character and log.
  • Select modules that playing would level your character up to the lowest appropriate level (probably 15 or 16, based on that 17-18 range you mentioned)
  • Apply the XP, gold and item bundles as if you had played those mods.
  • Take this version of your character to the con, play and have fun.
  • After the con, tear up this version of your character and never play him again. Go back to the version you saved in the first bullet, with no rewards or certs for your play at the con.

What I have been doing recently is making "test" characters.

I do not like the start at 5, 8 and 11 creation rules. If I play a character, I start it from one. But, would I like the character at a certain level to even continue playing it? Do I really want to build up a new character if I do not like it?

So I typically pick a level... say 8, 14 or 16. Use the DMG rules in character creation. Pick some commons and uncommons I think I would like. No rares or anything the character would not have access to. Then I try it out. If I like it, I start over at level 1. If not, scratch paper.

Recently I did this to try out the Scout, Vampire and Sentinel. Pretty good method, I would say.

Instead of throwing this character away, save it.  Play the original character up to the point where this character is at.  At that point, apply the xp and treasure from the mod you played at the convention.

He said the mod was a 11-20 mod and the levels of the characters playing (so far) are in the 17-18 range. All he needs is to get his character to level 15 as long as no one is playing anything above 18.

I recommend that you contact the con organizer and ask for his/her advice.
