Just want to make sure, is the Total Possible XP for an adventure includes XP for Major Quest ?

I got players who completed the Quest for the Necromancer last night when i ran WATE1-6 on high, but the adventure say the Total possible XP is 4,000, yet the Major Quest give 1,000 XP and they completed 5 encounters for a total of 3,580 XP.

So i gave them 3,580 XP  (4,000 XP with Quest for the Necromancer)  but wonder if it shouldn't be 4,580 for those who completed the Quest for the Necromancer ?

WATE1-6 Rwards Spoiler: Show

Encounter 2: False Target 400 XP
Encounter 3a: Terror at the Market 480 XP
Encounter 6: Exploring Where Evil Hides 400 XP
Encounter 7: Defeating His Guards 1000 XP
Encounter 8: Showdown with the Necromancer 1300 XP
Major Quest: Quest for the Necromancer 1000 XP

Total Possible Experience:  4,000 XP

I think it's actually supposed to be 3000, +1000 for major quest.  Look at Corm 1-6 for another example at the same level.

Yeah but the 5 encounters totalize 3,580 XP themselves, i can't believe i would only give them 3,000 XP ?

That means it's possible to lose out on exp during the module (such as by slipping up on a skill challenge or missing an encounter), but still reach the cap at the end.

I know, its not what i am talking about. WATE1-6 has 6 encounter giving 4,280 XP and my players did 5 out them for 3,580 XP but there is among that a Major Quest for 1,000 XP that some can also earn.

And so i am wondering if the 1,000 XP is on top of the 3,580 everyone earned, or those that completed the Quest for the Necromancer only get 420 XP out of the 1,000 XP and cap at 4,000 XP ?

I can.  I don't even think that'd be the record for most-lost-XP in a year-one.

Ok, but where does it say that i can only give the PC 3,000 XP max, effectively ripping them off of 580 XP  ?

If i am to reduce their XP. i'd like to be able to rest on legit documentation to back me up. The adventure WATE1-6 doesn't limit them to 3,000 XP

It strikes me as odd to give people less XP than they actually earned, while still being below the Total Possible Experience.

WATE1-6 says Spoiler: Show

Experience Points: Give PCs a full award for each encounter they successfully completed, and a half award if they were unsuccessful. Give no award if the characters did not play the encounter at all

5 Encounters: 3,580 XP

Total Possible Experience: 4,000 XP

I believe you did this correctly. The adventure "caps" at 4,000 XP, and only those who complete the major quest have the potential to reach the cap.

It's not written in the normal 3000xp total possible and +1000xp for the major quest.  The total xp gained for the mod cannot be over 4000, as that is the only limit mentionned.

The adventure lists the maximum experience you can give out. So you can not give out more than 4000 xp and to reach that amount the PC has to successfully complete the quest.

Writing Directors can ask to have the “challenge” amount of XP in an adventure exceed the max xp award. In these cases the xp award is not increased. The writing director had to ask in the adventure proposal for the increase (at the time proposals were reviewed by our Global Admin, both R&D and Novels departments and Chris Tulach).

When we put forth the proposal for WATE1-6 we asked an overage and it was granted.  I am not sure if we were the first to ask for such in connection with the completion of a major quest, though it is possible.  By the time we realized there was an issue with way the experience was listed the adventure was already with our Global Admin.  Unfortunately the change did not get made. There were a number of things going on at the time and it slipped through the cracks.

So the intent is that a successful completion of the adventure should net a PC 3000 xp (if they are playing high tier) with a bonus of 1000 xp for completing a major quest.
