I usually only run a mod once, and so I just predraw on battlemaps. Sometimes if a mod calls for like 5 maps, only 3 of which will be used, I get lazy, and might decide to draw on the spot (or more likely guess at which maps I'll need and only draw those). When I predraw, I try to duplicate all features as precisely as I can. As a matter of fact, when I'm done, people can usually look at the map and tell which sets the tiles came from. I try to use some 3d props when I can.
As player I do appreciate when DM's take the time to prepare tiles, or preprint color maps, particularly for conventions. I feel it adds to the experience. If I was going to run at a convention, I'd probably take the time to do it that way, in which case the clean maps would be life saver.

I don't have crashing problems with pymapper, though I do hit occasional other minor bugs. None that I worry about too much.
I never do the labeling in pymapper, though - I do all that in a separate program (like gimp or paint.net)
