Has anyone played a character with this theme? Being able to make 1 of any alchemical item for which you have the formula at the end of any short rest seems very handy. I realize alchemical items aren't amazing and I have to keep potions separate from them in my mind but the versatility really feels advantageous. Brad

I don't have an active character with the theme, but it is something that I wanted to try once I eventually play an Encounters PC again through LFR. My thinking was to use Alchemist to make Woundpatch items as a post-encounter healing boost... and as a herbalist counterpoint to his poison-making ability as an Executioner.

The woundpatch is one I have sen used. Anyone else have game examples of alchemical items they like, and would like to make on the spot?

If they would release alchemical formulas for existing potions or allow for alchemical healing potions of some kind, it would see a lot more use ....

A girl I play with has an Artificer with this theme. She usually makes an Alchemical Fire during a short rest, and then she has an area burst one that she can use or hand off to another character. It really messes up fights with swarms.
What makes me sad - no more compiled magazines: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/27580349/Dungeon_and_Dragon_Magazine_PDFs&post_num=24#495423645

The best use seems to be creating alchemical items that only require a minor action, or can be applied to ammo/weapon in advance: "Bloodstinger Poison".

I have a Human Artificer at level 7 who I took with the Alchemist theme; it seems like a natural fit for the class thematically. From the perspective of optimization, I think there are probably a lot of choices which are much better. Most of the adventures I have been through with him the alchemy ability was little more than a novelty (IE: nothing essential to the party's success) or good for roleplaying, but I have had a lot of fun with it. My build involves Crossbow Caster and keying off Wisdom as a secondary so I primarily use my short rest crafting for either Alchemist Fire (for minion swarms) or items that can be applied to ammo as mentioned above.
Between taking the Alchemist theme and having access to ritual casting, you can really make quite a versatile Artificer; though it is quite a drain on precious gold. Good excuse to be on a quest for the philosopher's stone, no?

Or you could charge a maintenance/upkeep fee for healing allies or modifying their items. A modest, temporary fee for essential supplies. Like ale and the company of women with low morals.

Inferno Oil, which makes targets vulnerable to fire. Works well with an Alcemical Atomizer and the artificer power Burning Weapons, which allows allies to do bonus fire damage with weapon or fire attacks.
