OK, I've finally read through the thread to date.
Most favorite mechanic: Oath of Enmity (must admit I haven't played an Avenger, but this is fairly simple and straight-forward to implement)
Least favorite mechanic: anything the player does not know how it works
When I made up my Warlock, I also made myself type up every one of his powers with my keyboard. This way I knew his powers and their requirements. Of course, this was PH1-only so there wan't THAT much to type.
When my son made up his Warlord, I made him do the same thing so HE would know what his character can do. I think it worked (if I do say so myself) - he can run his own character and offer helpful advice to me.
I am a former Upward coach and try to give every player at the table an opportunity to shine. I try to avoid being a glory-hog - extending to telling the table "just because I've got all the CHR skills does not mean you have to do what I say."

If I was writing the Tome of Lore, I would let Auppenser sleep. But I also would have him dream.
In his dreaming he re-activates the innate powers of (some) mortal minds. Or his dreaming changes the nature of reality - currently very malleable thanks to Spellplague &c. Or whatever really cool flavor text and pseudo-science explanation people react positively to.
