Yeah, I agree. I'd personally much rather have an interesting/unique character than an uber-optimized but boring one. I generally view it as a failure in character design if other people have carbon copies of my character.
For example, I was absolutely horrified when I pulled out my shiny new elven ranger and DaveK, before he had seen the character in action or knew anything about her at all, was able to recite to me my entire character sheet - stats, powers, feats, skills, home region, items, my character's preferences for long walks on the beach - everything. This was back in the very early days of 4e when I didn't know elven archer rangers was a popular build. Sure, my ranger did a lot of damage, but she was boring as heck and I saw clones of her all over the place. So I rebuilt her, got her a bear friend, and have been greatly enjoying my not-super-optimized but unique and fun-to-play ranger. (Although yes, I still have Twin Strike and my Fighter still has Come and Get It.)
I know other people's playstyles differ, and that's cool, but I'd personally rather have any other Epic Destiny than boring ol' +2 to two stats.

You've come a long way, Lori! Much love and respect for Tephra.

Vondrigan the Stern, Dwarf Cleric|Invoker, Soulforged will most certainly be a Chosen of Moradin (how can he not).

Optimization-wise, it is very, very tough to beat the +2 to two stats of Demigod/Chosen.
But soo boring

I think that is just Dave Kay. He has the ability to read minds to know what players are going to do.

Actually, I don't think Demigod is really considered a top-tier ED any longer. [...] Lots of other EDs get the +2 to two stats or get big abilities and a +2 to one stat.
OK, let me rephrase: it's really tough to beat +2 to one (or two) stats that your character uses. Whether that comes in the demigod package or some other package.
That said, I'm probably going to make my dragonborn Paladin / Questing Knight into a Saint when he hits epic.
So I'm not even following my own advice.

My LFR paladin will end up as a Chosen of Sune... if LFR ever gets into the Epic Tier! My wizard in a homebrew campaign will be going for the Archlich destiny.

Wow, Sune has more of a following than I'd supposed.
Avatar of Battle might actually be decent for my warlord. I'd have to sorta burn a feat on a once per day channel divinity and one of the benefits is lesser, but it's slightly more interesting than Demigod, probably.

Heartwarder is a mechanically competitive option to Hospitaler for Charisma paladin.
Sune is also a thematically appropriate deity for characters who run around with exceptionally high Charisma.

Draconic Incarnation for my dragon soul sorcerer -- it's the easy choice but also an awesome choice on many levels. He's gonna be able to turn into a dragon twice per day, and who doesn't like that? Also those powers will interact nicely with Avatars of Chaos, although it'll make my convention mini bag rather heavy.
