In my previous blog post, I mentioned the health issues of my elderly uncle in Chicago. In late March, he died due to those health issues so I recently arranged a small funeral in Roswell NM for him, which is where he was born and the family graves are mostly located. Not unexpected but still a stresser. Three cousins attended the funeral, family whom I had not seen in a long time.
For those of you who may be fascinated by Roswell myth, no, I did not visit any of the UFO shops/museums while in town. I did have some good Mexican food and recommend the Cattle Baron's for steak.
I had not visited Roswell for 4 decades and really did not remember much about the town.

Last year, particularly in the Spring, Claire and I were thrown off our stride between some changes to LFR and a bit too much headaches with authoring adventures and some stresses from RL. WATE2-1 and WATE2-2 came out when they were originally scheduled, but we fell (5-6) months behind on WATE2-3 and WATE2-4. No small part was bad timing to write both WATE2-3 and MINI2-1 basically at the same time. I thought I had recruited another gamer to help me write MINI2-1 but he bailed on me. As that was committed to GENCON 2010, that came first, and as a result WATE2-3 really suffered. At least MINI2-1 was loved by many of the gamers.
In RL I started filling in a higher level job in April, then was officially promoted to it in early July. The work level kicked it up a notch, making it tougher to have as much gaming time.
Then my eldery uncle in Chicago was diagnosized with a serious medical condition, followed by the unexpected death of his friend and caregiver in October. As his closest relative, I had to step forward to see to his care. Fortunately, that seems to be going as well as could be hoped for now, but it was a stressful period.
Brad did a good job with the adventure in WATE2-4, stepping in when Erik had to bow out due to professional commitments, but we have added some additional story/color richness to go along with the new story emphasis in LFR and to plant some seeds for future Waterdeep story arcs. We just sent WATE2-4 off to Sean; I don't know how quickly he can turn it around and post it.
Let's see what else-- power outage during snow/ice/freezing weather, our range died (the electric oven element caught fire), and Claire's car's radiator sprang a massive leak.
We had three experienced, good authors lined up for the three Year 3 Waterdeep adventures, but one had to drop out so Claire is writing one of those adventures.

This week Claire and I went to DDXP. Claire mostly DMed (mostly WATE2-1, but also ran one tale of SPEC2-1 P1 and WATE1-2). I mostly attended seminars and worked on our proposal for WATE2-3. Got some help from Mike Mearls, a senior D&D designer at WotC which was fantastic. The proposal has been sent to our new Global Admin and we are awaiting his comments.
I was asked and agreed to help write an adventure for Gencon. Not sure what I can say about it specifically, but should be fun.
DDXP was up in attendance and ran very smoothly. Dave Christ should be proud.

Somehow we have multiple irons in the fire right now.
We are trying to get our final edit of WATE2-2 done, we volunteered to help edit the H1 and the H3 of the SPEC2-1 to speed up the editing, I have started work on WATE2-3 proposal, and have WATE2-4 and 2-5 coming up on my scope soon.
And it keeps snowing outside.

We just did the first playtest of WATE2-2 draft. The players enjoyed the story, but it ran too long. We will make some adjustments and try a second playtest. Not sure how much was due to the players, and their dice going cold, so the second playtest is critical. Being a paragon adventure, however, may be a factor.

Writing a LFR Special, even just one level band of five, is an interesting experience. I think writing to a premise with some contraints on what we could do gave me a bit more empathy for the authors we have asked to do just that. I am glad the draft is done and hope the editing and playtesting goes smoothly. The first playtest went well yesterday.

We finished our editing of the draft of WATE2-1 and sent it to our Global Admin, Shawn Merwin. This will start another major quest in 1Q of 2010. Now that we are firmly in the mode of trying to include many aspects of Waterdeep, making the adventure more than a bare bones D&D adventure, yet still not wordy and playable in 4 hours (always a challenge), it requires a lot more scrutiny.
EDIT: We got word that the draft was good and no further editing was needed by us. Always a good feeling when author and editors make a good team that is on target! Brad is a great author.
Also, my thanks to Rosemary Jones and Erik Scott de Bie for their help.

As the weather turned nicer today, I decided to do some trimming out in front. Before I completed cutting back branches and shrubbery along the drive, I apparently disturbed some bees and unfortunately, managed to get stung 4 or 5 times. I must have looked like the movie comedy of the guy running for the house, waving his cap trying to brush the bees off. Ouch, that smarted. Took some benedryl. Fortunately, I do not appear to be allegeric, a couple of the stings really smarted, esp the one near my left armpit. Swelling was minimal. Maybe I made a druid mad at me....hah, hah. Claire made me rest and watched me to be certain I was not going to fall over.

Claire and I went to a concert by the band America last night. They still have the talent that has kept them going for 40 years. It was great!

Went to the Ohio Rennaissance Festival this weekend; that was fun. Bought a couple of small decorative glass pumpkins and a sun hat for Claire. Leveled up our paragon level PCs and sorted/counted/bagged miniatures from the Dangerous Delves set. Yes, we were seriously behind. The Legendary Evils set is waiting for the same process.
