Aha! You have to click Create Thread to save/post something in the Forum. A bit confusing -- the comment above the Preview is "this has not been saved" so I went looking for a Save or Post button.

Watch out - if you're setting up your calendar, events are Public by default. Haven't found a way to change this yet.
