I fudge dice rolls . . . not always, but often . . . and without hesitation.

It started innocently enough.  My first two sessions DMing brutalized my players.  Low player rolls combined with party-killing high monster rolls caused my players to expend their daily powers in the first encounter.  These were supposed to be the easier ones.  The look in their eyes revealed disbelief and demoralization with successive monster hit after hit.  I wanted to do something to help them, but they all saw the rolls and would know that I was faking it if I did.  We were missing something . . . a DM screen.

At the beginning of our third session, my friend Paul says, “I’ve got something for you.”  It was a DM screen.  I think it was an unspoken request to do something about their Crit-Master
