These Holdfasts comprise roughly 80% of all dwarves living on (insert world name here). Each Holdfast in the the Bulwarks owes allegiance to the High King. Each is ruled by a Thane, usually the head of the clan residing within the clanhold. The Thane for each hold is technically voted on by the elders of the clan, however tradition states that the Clan's Patriarch holds the position. Dwarves being dwarves, this generally means the head of the clan becomes the Thane. Clan Grendlven being the one exception. The High King's throne always goes to the eldest surviving son of the royal family. This often is not the first born. Each son of House Grendlven is trained by the Berserker corps that fights at the forefront of all dwarven armies. Many young royals aren't able to survive the grueling training, not the mention the battles that they much take part in. This does, however, ensure that each Berserker King, as they are known, are able to defend themselves against all but the most powerful foes. This tradition dates back to the original High King, Urgrim Clanless, who was given the crown when dwarves first came to this world through the Godrift. He was given the clan name Grendlven, and he accepted many clanless into his hold. |
