And yet there is a 1500 reply discussion on how 4e lost the D&D feel... community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...

Figured I would throw in an opinion. It really bothers me when someone on here uses the typical "it works why change it" "what everyone plays or wants is D&D 4.0"
ummm, I don't play D&D 4.0, I dont know anyone that does. To me the statement "if it works why change it" applies to AD&D. Not this game some of the new kids play called D&D 4.0. Now, i'm sure D&D 4.0 is a great balanced figure board game. Im sure I would have fun playing it. But, at the end of the day, if I...

This idea simply doesn't make sense. If the rule exists, it exists. He contradicts himself: the article opens with the idea that "attacks of opportunity existed in the system long before" they were codified. Thus, nothing changed but the label of the rule. To say that rules should magically come into being as the players level up is absurd. Rules exist. Period, end of discussion. Now, if you want to talk about *which* rules should exist, that's a topic I'd love to hear. But to pretend you can...

I see no reason why simple rules of play cannot be used even for 30th level characters. Certainly, a 30th level character should be more complicated to play than a 1st level character. That does not mean that playing a 30th level character can't be simple. The increased complexity would result from the increased number of feats that a 30th level player has, not because of any change in basic game mechanics. I consider things like "attacks of opportunity", "damage resistance", different types of...

You know how they fixed the fact that no one took the alchemist feat? they created the alchemist theme... do the same thing for practiced study... Call it what you will but it would go something like:
Level 1: You gain the Practiced Study Feat, You also know one first level study. You can perform one study/day without expending component costs. (exclude studies that result in permanent stuff that can be exploited)
Level 5: You gain knowledge of an additional study of up to 5th level,...

It makes me happy to see that the lead designer of 5e is actually in tune with how I view magical items.

I can interpret this as one of two ways:
      1) You're replacing the skill DC with a different nomenclature (journeyman, expert, etc.). You're just putting a different shade of lipstick on a pig.
      2) It also sounds like you're adding additional skills. (i.e. Expert swimming, Grandmaster climbing, etc.).
      So really... why the change...?
Like AH_viperm4a3 said above - Train your GM's on how to use the skill system to craft good, dramatic, and fun encounters.

This is basically what I have always done. The easiest way for a player to get a DC down to where he can hit it is to play smart. Trying to Search for runes written in invisible ink is hard, unless you have researched and created the revealing reagent.

      Part 2
Basically what you said there was feat A is better than feat B. Obviously. There are many inferior feats. There will be many inferior class features, skills, ect. but some people restrict the options available also...if there wasn't a redundant +1/2 level bonus across the board there would be less need for these to hit bonuses, this would also return magic items to more of a perk than a necessity.

I'm fully with Mr. Mearls on this, though he's treating this as some new concept. Other games have been and are doing this right now, like Savage Worlds or GURPS.
I would be on board with a new edition of D&D that wasn't so proscriptive. Ever since 3E came out I've been trying to extract the Vancian magic system and replace it with something simpler, with fewer but more broad spells, power points, and an actual skill you have to roll. Problem is, everything in D&D is so intricately...
