The idea of subsystems being placed on top of the core system is very appealing to me. I have been a heavy user of house rules across my D&D experience (Basic Set through to 4e). What I think would be an outstanding add-on to D&D Next would be a generic set of guidelines that allows DMs to develop their own subsystems in a controlled and balanced way...
I'm excited about the developments occurring with D&D and look forward to hearing about developments...despite truly enjoying...

I can see the narrative combat module becoming a mainstay in my group, however, are there plans to include spell options? I would like to see the return of 3E meta-magic feats (i.e. Enlarge Spell) and this would be a perfect fit for them. As spellcaster declares if they want to "enlarge" a spell and take the appropriate modifier to their attack; this makes spells more dynamic in combat.

I like skills in 3E but found the points system too fiddly and also the bonuses got to big to fast, higher levels could almost always make a check unless I threw in ridiculous DCs. I like the Tier idea, just make sure it scales with the levels.
      June 18, 2012 5:45 AM PDT
I in general like the skill points of 3e, but I also liked when semi-redundant skills were merged. I, however, want the merges to make sense. It makes sense for Open Lock and Disable Device to go together, and it makes sense for Sleight-of-Hand and Escape Artist to go together, but it does not really make sense to me to combine all four into one skill.
Also, I strongly believe in a difference between Search skill as an active skill, and Spot and Listen belonging to a separate, passive...

Monte's statement and Demohidu's colourfully written comment are both right on the money! Let's try to achieve that with some well designed mechanics to back it up.
      June 15, 2012 3:13 PM PDT
I love Marcos and Demohidu's suggestions. My only concern is I don't want high level gear to be mandatory at higher levels—shackling the DM to treasure tables has problems.
But the key thing is, I like the notion that at higher levels, each class is functioning at their peak whatever that peak is. For a Fighter, dodging most attacks and hitting most of the time makes sense as a high level goal. For a Wizard that's bending reality. The Fighter is more threatened by reality bending attacks,...

I would prefer to see multiple attacks as a "Feat" or theme selection. Some warriors are good at beating down one opponent, others are good at fighting several at once. And a lesson we learn from "The Princess Bride" is that these two styles are very divergent.
      June 27, 2012 2:53 PM PDT
I'm all for multiple attacks or single attacks being a Feat or Theme option. In particular, the idea that any attack in a sequence could be a Combat Maneuver appeals to me.
Being able to choose between complex combos or large, single strikes feels like a nice, Fighter appropriate equivalent to a Wizard's spell preparation options.
