Multiclassing is when a character takes on a Secondary Class that is different from their Primary (starting) Class (note: both classes of the Hybrid count as the Primary Class, for this limitation). Each character may have only one secondary class (exception: Bards with Multiclass Versatility may have multiple secondary classes, but otherwise follow these same rules), which may be obtained in either (or both) of the following options.

The first is by taking a multiclass feat for a class. One cannot take the multiclass feat for their own class or related subclasses (or, in the case of hybrids, any related class). These feats may be retrained as per normal, and a character may only take multi-class feats related to a single secondary class. If training in a skill is earned by doing so, and it is a skill which the character already has, then they may retrain unless they did not have a choice in taking the skill in the first place, or their choices have been used up (examples: Wizard with Arcana, Ranger with Nature & Dungeoneering).

The second is by training in that class at the appropriate level (as per the Unearthed Arcana:Alternative Multi-Classing Rules article in Dragon 421). For those who do not have access to that, what follows is an abbreviated explanation (and for those who do, there some restriction and clarifications, mentioned within).

When a character gains a level, they may opt to gain that level in any class other than their starting (primary) class. No character (not even Bards) can have more levels in any one secondary class than they have in their primary class. A class and its subclasses count as the same class as each other (so a Hunter may train into both Scout and Ranger, and vice versa; likewise, a character who has a multiclass feat for one subclass counts toward the related ones too). A level gained in a secondary class (or subclass) may not be retrained to a different class (or subclass), not even to the primary class or vice versa (though other options from within that same class may be taken by retraining), and at higher levels when a power-swap is required, it must be with a power from the same class. This level counts toward the prerequisite of being the secondary class, as if they had a multiclass feat.

When training into a class, they gain two things from the secondary class instead of from their primary class: the number of Hit Points appropriate for that class, and a power that could be chosen at that level.

This does not grant the character any previous Class Features (including Proficiencies), nor does it grant later ones without further training; it simply grants them the power options at that specific level. Characters whose primary class do not get Daily Attack powers (Slayers and Thieves, for example) may not gain them in this fashion. However, there are some exceptions to these rules, as listed below, and other exceptions may be requested (though the DM has the final right to refuse). At higher levels, encounter powers such as Power Strike and Backstab may be used for power-swapping when both their class or subclass when appropriate; otherwise, power swaps, like retraining, must be done within the same class or subclass.

Current Exceptions:
• Warpriest: If your primary class is Warpriest, and you would gain a domain utility or encounter attack power from taking a level as a warpriest cleric, you can select an utility or encounter attack power (as appropriate) of that level from the secondary class.
• Sentinel: If your primary class is Sentinel, when you would normally gain Improved Combined Attack (3rd & 7th), you can instead gain one encounter attack power of that level from the chosen secondary class. When you would gain the a thousand faces power (16th), you can instead gain one utility power of the appropriate level or lower from the chosen secondary class. Instead of gaining an animal companion power (17th), you can replace one of your encounter attack powers; you need to do so only if you gained an encounter attack power from a secondary class at a lower level.
• Fighter: At 3rd level, you can gain the power strike power instead of a fighter encounter attack power. At 13th level, you can replace one of your fighter encounter attack powers gained at 1st, 3rd, or 7th level with the power strike power (or the ability to use power strike one more time per encounter, but still only once per turn). At 17th level, you can gain one fighter at-will stance power from among the options from the Knight or Slayer subclasses, replacing one of your fighter encounter attack powers with the chosen stance; you cannot replace power strike or a use of that power with this option, and after you select a stance, you cannot replace it at later levels unless you retrain into another stance among the options allowed.
• Paladin: At 3rd level, you can gain the holy smite power instead of gaining another paladin encounter attack power. At 13th level, you can replace one of your paladin encounter attack powers with the holy smite power (or the ability to use holy smite one more time per encounter, but still only once per turn).
• Ranger: At 3rd level, you can gain the disruptive shot or the power strike power instead of another ranger encounter attack power. At 5th level, you can take the reactive shift power instead of a new daily power; if so, you cannot replace it at later levels. At 9th level, instead of choosing a daily attack power, you can gain either the Close Combat Archery class feature or the dual weapon attack power; if you do so, you cannot replace it at later levels. At 13th level, you can replace one of your ranger encounter attack powers gained earlier with the disruptive shot or power strike power (or the ability to use one of those powers one more time per encounter, but still only once per turn).
• Rogue: At 3rd level, you can gain the backstab power instead of gaining a rogue encounter attack power. At 5th level, you can take the cunning escape power instead of a new daily attack power; if so, you cannot replace it at later levels. At 13th level, you can replace one of your rogue encounter attack powers gained earlier with the backstab power (or the ability to use backstab one more time per encounter, but still only once per turn).
• Ardent, Battlemind, and Psion: Characters that gain a level in a psionicist class without having Power Points cannot use augmented powers, and only count as having 0 power points when it is harmful. Characters with Psionic Augmentation (or Psionic Dabbler feat) only gain power points when they train in a class with that same feature at the appropriate levels.
• Monk: Full Discipline powers do not require any other class features in order to be used; they can be taken as a secondary class without any issue.
