The Flats
One of the three geographic locations defining the surface remains of the fallen dwarven empire, The Flats is a desolate waste. Its appearence is similar to the high desert lands of Arizona and New Mexico, however, it has not evolved over billions of years. It went from being a rolling plain full of grass covered hills and crops of wheat and corn to a true desert. The flora and fauna are not natural to the desert environment and thus, mostly died off. The remainders are goats, donkeys, packs of wild dogs, etc. The coyote is unknow, the racoon perished, and cattle were soon eaten into extinction after the cataclysim. The land is desolate. Birds and rabbits are about all a traveler can hunt, both require large expenditures of time and effort for minimal protein gain. It does rain often, but the huge canyons, cracks, and sinks quickly drain the land, usually in dangerous flash floods. The few remaining rivers and springs are very valuable and dangerous...
In the midst of this devestaion lies the babe of the new dwarven civilizaiton. Most of the surviving dwarves live on the Flat which is divided into counties. Ancient merchant houses ruled the Empire prior to the Fall and a few have survived into the present day. Most are now set up as "Lord and Vassel" houses, afterall, the strong rule where once the rich did.
Most counties are ruled by a Count. The count is not necessarily a hereditary position as few natural births have occured. Thus a count must guard his back, bribe the powerful, keep his friends close and his enemies closer. The count's right hand man is usually titled Vizer, an OE term for head accountant. A vizer is usually the brains of the operation, directing resources, saving food for hard times, recommending building projects, etc.
Many places in the Flat carry names placed on them by goblins. Goblins greatly outnumber dwarves on the Flat, although they lost numbers in the 10s of thousands after the cataclysm through starvation and a strange civil war. When the dwarves began to come to power in various areas, the leaderless goblins thanked the spirits and most were happy to swear fealty to their new dwarven lords. Order was restored and there was peace.
The eastern Flat region currently has five counties:
  • Sun (Pelor)
  • New Karnak
  • Red Sand
  • Nippur
  • Sedona
