Builds: Balanced Cleric
Balanced Cleric DiscussionThis is the trickiest build to pull off since you need to be good at everything. Chances are you will be struggling with spread out stats, equipment, and feats. The plus side is that you are useful in more situations, have your pick of powers, and fit in with more types of parties. Your race choice really should have a bonus to either wisdom or strength, For races you will want one that has either a strength or wisdom buff, with preferably a buff in charisma, dexterity, or constitution as well. Good choices include Dwarf, Dragonborn, Half Orc, Longtooth shifter, Goliath, and Elf.
The only way you can get 2 18s in your attack stats to start out with right now is with a longtooth shifter. A 16 16 12 12 10 8 array will get you Str 18 Con 12 Dex 10 Int 8 Wis 18 Cha 12. That is a a good balanced build, but if you just bump str and wis you will not qualify for any weapon or armor specialization feats. You can still get scale at paragon and should probably consider getting some shield feats in heroic along with a bastard sword, unless you stick with a mace & shield. Your other choice is to go with a reach weapon (great spear) and hope for the best by hiding behind your defenders, but clerics are always a tempting target for DMs to go after.
Other possible builds let you start with 2 16s or 1 18 and 1 16. A half orc can start with a similar point buy as above and end up with Str 18 Con 10 Dex 15 int 8 wis 16 cha 11. Still does not qualify for any more armor feats, but can get shield or chain specialization and the heavy blade feats at the cost of a slightly lower charisma mod. A point spread of 16 14 14 13 10 8 on a dwarf lets you go with a final spread of str 16 con 15 dex10 int 8 wis16 cha 14, This lets you qualify for armor up to plate mail, the axe feats, and still have a decent charisma. An elf can do the same with a bastard sword and shields by switching con and dex.
For feats you are best off getting the focused expertise feat from dragon magazine and then getting a weapon/implement combo. If your DM does not allow that then you will still need to get both feats by mid paragon. After this and any weapon/armor feats and maybe a CD and cleric feats and some racial feats you will not have that many feats left so multiclassing more than intro feat is probably out.
For paragon paths you have your pick of more than any other builds. Any of the PHB will work as will any of the lazer/balanced/battle focused ones in DP and so will the racial ones. Just do not pick the nondamaging healing ones.
Balanced Cleric ExampleDecent at everything and no glaring weaknesses except for equipment and feats being spread thin since I did not let myself use dragon magazine material. What he lacks in defense he kind of makes up for in resistances and regeneration.
