Background

It has only been a year since she took up guarding caravans. Well, if you can call a single merchants cart or few goods-laden ponies a caravan. When Britta was young, she often traveled with her father and mother in similar caravans. It was dangerous traveling through wilds from one town to the next and her father could not afford the coin to hire guards. Besides, what little he could sell wasn’t worth stealing.
Britta can still remember her mother screaming in pain and agony as her father lay dead nearby. In the brush not far away Brita covered her ears and bit her lips to stifle a cry. Stop it! Stop it! She rocked back and forth. Then it did stop. The bandits took the only things of any real value--her parents' lives.
It was a month before Britta made her way out of the wilderness to the nearest city. Britta was welcomed at a goodly temple and grew up there. She took to the lessons well enough and the priests had hopes she would ‘officially’ become a member, though once Brita was old enough she would spend more and more time away.
The head priest grew worried and followed her one day. In the town square Britta met up with Elesarva, a city guard who had a good reputation. The head priest almost left when he saw the two heading for the gates, so he continued to follow. Not far from town, in a small glade sheltered from prying eyes, they stopped. The head priest was about to step in and confront the two, thinking the older guard was taking advantage of a youth’s innocence. Then Elesarva tossed Britta a sword and they began going through various stances and forms. First the momentum was slow, but it gradually got faster and faster, Britta keeping pace and following Elesarva’s movements. The head priest walked quietly back into town without Britta knowing she had been followed. She had made her choice and may the gods watch over her.
The small wagon creaked. Little Greegar inside must be shifting in her sleep as her parents lay sleeping underneath the wagon. Not far away, Britta turns about briefly and looks that way, all is well, then looks back as she walks her circuitous route around the camp. Slowly and deliberately she walks.
The night was cool and only crickets disturbed the quiet. After ensuring nothing was near, Britta returned to the small fire beside the wagon. All was safe.
In the year she has been a guard for merchants who could not afford one, Britta’s reputation has grown. The merchants couldn’t pay in gold, not like the larger caravans, but that was okay. In the months when no caravan was able to travel and other guards found coin and work hard to come by, Britta was welcomed into homes and given food and comfort. To her this was worth more than coin. She knew her charges would be safe and the little ones, like Greegar, wouldn’t find themselves alone in the wilderness. Not when she was guard.
