Meta-plotline in LFR: Hearts in Shadow

    Tuesday, October 19, 2010, 1:13 AM

I actually wrote a proposal for a blog in february that put a meta-plotline out, but it never got published.
I looked it up, and this is what it was ( adjusted with some additional info for this year):

The Living Forgotten Realms campaign consist of many adventures, divided over many regions. Playing these adventures in a random sequence, players may get a fragmented impression of the world and the stories that are ongoing.

A fair number of the adventurers are interconnected, and some are tied, directly or indirectly, to a larger story. This details such a - still ongoing - story.

The following takes some minor spoilers - only enough to explain how to tie adventures together and recognize recurring themes and NPCs.

The main part of the Hearts in Shadow saga takes place in the Dalelands, which are wedged between various enemies: Sembia and Netheril at its borders, and the drow below.

Both drow and shadovar play a role, working to undermine the governments of Cormyr, the Dalelands, and the Dragoncoast free cities while seeking to control a mysterious force that is the cause of the appearance of shadow creatures in western Cormanthor.

The greater story consists of various smaller arcs - some of which are political, while others focus on the wilds in which . The main arcs are the following:

The Conspiracy of Ravens (DALE1-1 The Prospect, DALE1-3 Master and Servant, DALE1-6 The Vesperin Initiative):

This arc introduces the main allies for the PCs. It works towards the formation of an alliance, an important ally should the PCs seek to fight the forces of Netheril. The arc also reveals the existence of the villainous Mirabeta Selkirk as they fight her agents.

Arts and Crafts (DRAG1-7 Crafts, DALE1-7 Arts):

Playable in any order, this is a low heroic adventure series, who forms a prelude to the Pain and Suffering arc. Playing DALE1-1 The Prospect and DRAG1-1 Many Hands Make Light Work before entering these series allow PCs to be familiar with some of the NPCs that feature as the hooks for these adventures.

Byar's Seven (DALE1-2 Blades for Daggerdale, DALE1-4 The Lady in Flames, DALE2-1 Forever, DALE1-5 Hunters' Down):

This series plays mostly in the level 4-7 range, and is best planned to be played short after each other. While DALE2-1 Forever is not part of the binding major quest, it is a direct follow-up of DALE1-4 The Lady in Flames, featuring the same main NPC. It also explains some occurrences in DALE2-2 Agony.

Unlike most other adventures mentioned here, this series is fairly basic and does not deal much with politics. It's events are no less important, and will be more fully explored in DALE2-3 Swords from Ploughshares - where its important to the other factions in the larger story may become apparent.

Stem the Tide (DALE2-3 Swords from Ploughshares, DALE2-4 Illsyldra)
This arc investigates and deals with the cause of events around Byar's Seven. It introduces events around the drow and provides ties to Sschindylryn.
DALE2-3 Swords from Ploughshares also includes a tablet fragment.

White Petal Demise (DRAG1-4 Falling Snow, White Petal, DRAG1-5 White Flower Falling, DRAG1-6 Night of Falling Petals):

This arc focuses on the Shou in the Dragoncoast. Some NPCs recur, either in the Arts and Crafts or the Pain and Suffering arcs. Moreover, DRAG1-6 Night of Falling Petals provides a prophecy that may play a role in CORE2-11 The Sign of Four.

Pain and Suffering (DRAG2-1 Discomfort, CORM2-2 Pain, DALE2-2 Agony):

Continuing the Arts and Crafts threat, Westgate, Cormyr, and Dalelands deal with a nemesis that threatens to undo the achievements from The Conspiracy of Ravens. This series also ties to the Byar's Seven arc, and leads into CORE2-11 The Sign of Four.

Shattered Secrets (CORE2-2 Rising of the Dark, CORE2-11 The Sign of Four, CORE2-12 The Sschindylryn Heresy).
This arc is the lead-in to the epic campaign. It gives closure to  most loose ends in the previous arcs. CORE2-2 isa not aprt of the major quest, but fairly important as it introduces the Mistress of the Night.
The arc deals with the shattered fragments found in various adventures in LFR.

    Supporting Adventures

Many adventures do not contain events directly referenced in the story, but may still work to support the story. These are the following:

CORE1-1 Inheritance: The merchant Destryn Tantherym, who hires the PCs, reoccurs at some places. In addition, the Missing Children quest series (CORE 1-5 Touched by Darkness and CORE 1-8 Taken) deals with Netheril and the devoted of Shar, adding to the overarcing story's theme.

CORE1-2 The Radiant Vessel: introduces Jonster Yate, who re-occurs in DRAG1-6 Night of Falling Petals and various Dalelands adventures. The Radiance Against Thay series is not tied specifically to the story arc, but is not hard to add to the roster of adventures to include.

CORM1-1 The Black Knight of Arabel: A Cormyran adventure that includes Netheril as an enemy, providing a common enemy. Further Cormyran adventures also provide a common ally in Lord Prios, which may be of aid in CORM2-2 Pain.

SPEC1-3 Ghosts of the Past: This special adventure takes place in Myth Drannor, allowing the PCs to gain influence with the eladrin of Cormanthor - granting the PCs allies in DALE1-6 The Vesperin Initiative and CORE2-2 Rising of the Dark. This adventure also includes a tablet fragment.
Note: playing all the parts is possible, though some DME may be needed to reconcile the time difference between these parts, which in the original running take place at the same time.

Below are the adventures that form a part - directly or indirectly - or enhance Hearts in Shadow story arc, in a recommended order to run. It is possible to run the adventures in a different order within the level band, with the exception of DALE2-1 Forever and DALE2-3 Swords From Ploughshares, which should be run (in order) after DALE1-4 The Lady in Flames to prevent confusion. Bolded adventures are part of the arc(s). Others are suggestions that may add to the flavor of the adventure. An adventure marked with a * contains a fragment. It may not be possible to run all suggested  adventures in a level band before PCs level out of it.

Below is a list of articles that explicitly deal with FR. Note that I left out 'channel divinity' articles for Core deities that also exist in the Realms (i..e Bane,. Moradin, Corellon, and Sehanine), since those articles do not contain Realmslore.
Note that there are also a series of RPGA adventures that - until Q3 2010 - are also considered canon, and some also contain Realmslore.
See community.wizards.com/lfr for more info on these adventures.
WotC also has its own list of FR-related articles, but that list is inaccurate.

    Ada's in D&D

    Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 9:02 AM

Years ago I wrote the setup for a Ravenloft campaign that never really got of the ground.

It would start in the Masque of the Red Death setting (Earth the 19th century), before a disastrous event would send the PCs into Ravenloft.

The event involved the creation (and then activation by nefarious elements) of the one and only Babbage machine - the first computer designed (but never build), by Charles Babbage.

Obviously, the starting adventure would feature Babbage, as well as Ada Lovelace, the machine's programmer (if you have no idea who I am talking about - try Google - or see findingada.com ).

The adventure was to send the PCs' on adventures in Ravenloft, while Ada would try to contact them and repair the machine to get them back home - her attempts would aid or hamper the PCs as they would affect the demiplane of dread. Obviously, Babbage himself was not really of much interest. Ada was scheduled to be a much more important character. A woman heroine - smart, resourceful, and (was my intention) with a healthy dose of sarcasm.

As said, the campaign never got of the ground.

Still, I have kept an interest in using women protagonists as NPCs. I have, I like to believe, introduced quite a few 'Ada's' over the years. There is a certain dearth in women heroines in D&D, especially when you look at D&D adventures. Women are still often used as romantic interests, victims to resque, or troublemakers. You don't see strong women that often, though things are improving, especially in novels.

So who are my favorite Ada's in D&D?
I looked through the few (Forgotten Realms) novels I have managed to read thus far, and here  is my Top 10:

    10. Triel Baenre (yes, I know that stretches 'heroine' a bit) in the War of the Spider Queen series.

    9. Larelra Harsard, in 'Blackstaff Tower'

    8. Robyn in the Moonshae Trilogy

    7. Sophraea Carver, in 'City of the Dead'

    6. Aliisza in 'The Empyrean Odyssey'

    5. The Harlot in 'Realms of the Dead - The Resurrection Agent' (her nickname is a metaphor).

    4. Islif Lurelake in 'Swords of Eveningstar'

    3. Ythnel, the priestess from 'Maiden of Pain'. She is definitely a heroine, despite her faith.

    2. Amree, the ship's mage in 'Wrath of the Blue Lady'.

    1. Alustriel, the one sister of the Seven that I really, really like. Storm is like, ok. Alustriel rocks.

Maybe, someday, I'll resurrect my Ravenloft campaign, and add Ada to the above list.
Now how would Ada look like in 4th ed D&D...?

    The Forgotten Realms Post-Spellplague Timeline

    Monday, January 11, 2010, 8:36 AM

On the wizard boards, I have attempted to maintain a timeline for the Forgotten Realms of post-Spellplague events.

A forum is not the most reliable place to maintyain such a list though, so I am placing the list here, with the intent o maintain it here for the future. Well,w e''l se ehow that works...

Events in this list include events posted by Brian R. James on twitter You can also follow Brian on twitter at: twitter.com/brianrjames
Thanks also to nyluenatha and lirdolin for compiling other events.
