Hi im trying to create a game for a group of friends there are 8 of us and i would like to do something diffrent then we have ever done before.  i would like to make a game devoted to crafting in a way that they are self dependent on there own charecter and not just on okay wheres the cloest town all the time to restock and resupply.  i know they cant carry a forge and things of that nature but is this a bad idea.  they way im seeing it lower the DC to craft items or let time pass in game inbetween sessions but that would mean i let them go unnoticed if in dangurous territory for weeks at a time.  my idea is to have them start off as common classes then they choice a class at lv 1.  also i was planing on haveing them all randomly pick a role blacksmith,(2)soldier, captin, craftsman(bow),craftsman(stone),craftsman(wood),noble. theses will deside there starting gold and give bonus to stats to help there professions.  bad idea input

You could start the game having them survived a ship wreck and washed up on a beach somewere in the wilderness far from civilisation.
They will just be able to locate a small amount of stuff from the ship wreck, that is, they will have to be creative to craft some stuff

Well, you could just prior to campaign start give each player 2 or 3 bonus skill points and say they have to be spend upon craft or profession skills as representing their background and that you will let them buy them as classskills.
