One last thing that I wanted to ask: Where is Djarek? I was hoping to speak with him before we move and I haven't seen him.

He is on another of his walkabouts. I will let him know you will return here. Is there a message I should give him for you?

No, Elder. I simply wanted to see him again. Passing that along would be enough. We should probably make our preparations for our journey tomorrow, anyway. We have endangered you for long enough.

Unless Elder Ku'Chalk, Leander, or Alim has more: Durin assists in what preparations he may make himself useful with for tomorrow's journey.

If I jump too quickly ahead with the story just post what you would like to have done.

That night a feast is thrown in your honor. They bring in a fresh kill and roast a whole deer. There is wild music and dancing around the fire. And of course, strong drink. By the end of the night you've seen some things you'd never see before, including an elf dancing with a bear.

It seems most of the tribe is more relaxed around Durin now that they see he is just his old self.

The next morning you say your goodbyes and head off to West Dale, the port of your departure. You book passage with Captain Darfel of the Weeping Eye, a captain who is used to working with the Dragon Slayers. He commands a higher fee then a regular transport would, but he and his crew are used to heading towards danger. And also important, are used to being discrete.

You depart two days later when the winds and tide are favorable. Your journey to the island should take only one month, if the weather holds.

Ten days into your journey the lookout calls that a ship has been sighted. The captain looks through his telescope. It's the Bloody Hook, I'd recognize her hull anywhere. Captained by Bloody George. She's a slave trading vessel, also wanted for piracy. he looks towards Leander. With respect for your mission sir, as we are technically a member of the royal navy by mandate of the crown we are duty bound to pursue them. We've caught them by luck in the open ocean, where we can out pace them. But I am afraid if they turn to flee it will take us at least a week off course to catch them.

Kryden turns to the others, What's a week to us? And seeing as how we were boarded and captured by pirates, it seems only fair to ensure that doesn't happen to others. As long as we keep moving right?

Kryden places his hand over his brow and strains his eyes towards the Bloody Hook. Reaching back he pulls out his longbow and plucks the string.

Before leaving the forest. During preparations, Durin takes an opportune moment alone with Leander and Kryden, whispering harshly, plainly feeling both hurt and angry, especially with Leander.

I don't know what all that was about back there with the seed, but I don't seem to remember casting doubt or suspicion on your elders, let alone embarrass you in front them. It was enough for me to trust them because you did.

If Elder Ku'Chalk had wanted to betray us, he could have accomplished as much without the formality. I assure you of that.

Durin pauses for a moment before finishing, switching his gaze to Kryden.

It's been long road, but I think the road ahead is longer than the one behind. We're going to need to start having a little faith in each other's judgement if we're going to make it.

Forward to the ship

Durin listens to the crimes committed by the pirate leader and his crew.

How many lives have they ruined in the name of their greed?

Agreed. If the anti-divination magic on the box is working, I think time is less of a factor. If it's been comprimised as before, we could certainly confuse our persuers and maybe make them misinterpret our intent.

Cuing up on Kryden, Durin reaches for his longbow. As his fingers brush by Frostvein, it visibly ices over, shedding small bits of icy snow as he jostles around.

Activate cold damage

Oops, guess I skipped over a bit of necessary explanation in my haste. You do not have the protective box yet.

Mt. Chigo Tribe - July 10th 513
The morning that you depart from the Mt. Chigo Tribe, Ku'chalk gathers everyone from the whole tribe together. He divides everyone there into groups, and gives a map and instructions to each group on where to go and what to gather for the creation of the magical box. The tribe is temporarily dissolved for reasons of safety. We will gather what we need to help our brother Durin in his quest and we will meet again at a new location I have marked to the north in three months time. May the wind guide you, and may eagle watch your enemies.

The entire tribe separates and disburses, where there was once a camp there is no almost no trace that people were here. Elder Ku'chalk whispers in the ear of a small stone statue of a monkey then leaves it in a nook of one tree. Go brother Durin, do what must be done. I will see you again in three months time.

West Dale - July 20th 513

You're ready to depart on the weeping eye, and Alim has made his own arrangements on another ship. Alim gives Durin a big hug, and then shakes the hands of the others. Goodbye my friends, it has been a true blessing to travel with you, I would never want to be marooned on an island with anyone else. He flashes his characteristically over sized white toothed grin. I will go to my people, and talk to my elders and my father. We will see what we will see. If I cannot go myself I will send a messenger to the Dragon Slayers Academy to tell you what news I have. But it is a long journey, I don't expect you to hear from me until at least April next year.

Once he see that emotions have calmed down a little...

Elder Ku'Chalk, while we were on the island near the fountain of Nature we tried to learn what we could of acorns. One of the legends, and I pause but it hardly could seem true, but there was one that there is a Squirrel King who hordes and protects acorns and squirrels. Do you know if there is any truth to it?

As he's speaking, he hopes speaking of Elfland doesn't remind Ku'Chalk painfully of his lost brother.

Darfel laughs at your eagerness for battle. I'm sorry to disappoint you Durin, but I don't think you will get a chance to use that beautiful axe for a few days. They know they are out matched, and they will run, it will take some time to out maneuver them and get in range of our cannons, let alone our bows. Perhaps you can use your strength to help with the rigging

Catching the fleeing ship is going to be a skill challenge. You each get to pick one skill check to try for the first "round" (actually much longer then a combat round of course). Enough successes and you will enter cannon range with the enemy (and a new set of skills to try) enough failures and they escape. Each skill can only be succeeded at once, if you fail someone else can try to correct you by trying that skill again. If you can think of a useful way to apply a skill that I did not list or a different way to use a skill i did list, describe the action and make the roll and I will probably accept it if it is reasonable. The DCs will be set by the skill of the opposing ship and the difference in quality of the ships. You need six successes before you get three failures.

Insight: DC 16 Evaluate the crew. This does not contribute a success or failure, but it will reveal the DC's of the five "inspire crew" skills.

Diplomacy: Inspire the crew. Get the men to really put there back into it.

Bluff: Inspire the crew with lies. It'll probably work this time, but long term you will lose their trust.

Intimidate: Inspire the crew. But the captain might be upset that your threatening his crew.

Religion: Say a prayer, and inspire the crew. The gods might help, or they might not, but it's always good to feel like the gods are on your side.

Endurance: Man the rigging. Working the sails is exhausting, but your tireless efforts inspires those around you to get the job done.

Streetwise: 20You've heard about your opponents past battles and can help predict his tactics. Contributes a success and reveals the DC's of the following two skills.

History: Use your knowledge of previous battles and tactics to make a battle plan and out maneuver the enemy. Someone must use this skill or the captain will do it.

Nature: Predict the winds and weather better then your opponent does. Someone must use this skill or the lookout will do it.

Ha ha, the squirrel King. Oh yes, he is quite real. he's a bit bonkers even for my tastes. But don't worry, he has nothing to do with the world seed. Ku'chalk frowns. He always seemed harmless enough, and he certainly doesn't have the means or motivation to employ something like Darkwing. No, no, I don't think he is involved in all this.

Durin speaks to the Druid in the language that Djarek taught him

Mr Fantastic Show

I will not fail you, the tribe, or your brother, Elder. May the winds guide your path. When we meet again, I pray I have better news than I did this time.

Hahahahahahahaha! Durin laughs, intermingled with a little unintetional screeching. As usual it's too loud and too long for comfort for anyone else but Alim, but at least he's laughing like his old self again. Durin returns Alim's hug. Good luck, my friend. I suppose this was bound to happen sooner or later. Men like us are needed in more than one place!

They both laugh loudly as Durin sees the tall Quartian off.
