Does one Fighter give Escort only to one Bomber or to all Bombers which are in the same sector? If Fighter gives Escort only to one Bomber when should I choose the friendly Bomber?

Another quick escort question if I may. Situation: playing under darkness rules. My friendly fighter is placed in a sector, yet fails the search check, recieving an aborted counter. Can it still escort friendly bombers in that sector?
Since it defies logic a bit I thought that I'd ask, but the rules I've looked at seem to indicate that it can. Namely, an aborted aircraft functions as normal until the end of the air defense phase (when escort would be used).
Nothing but Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash!
