I'd much rather the math of the game be very well done so that no one notices it during play, than it be done badly and sessions of the game come to a grinding halt because one player destroys the game with an accidental feature combination.
When the math works how its supposed to you don't notice it. When it doesn't work well you realize that the game loses some of its fun...
Yeah, the design team needs a full time "math guy". Testing basic math shouldn't be something playtesters have to do. Playtesters are there to find broken builds and find ways to abuse spells and abilities.
