So, one of my buddies who runs the current version of the Realms had a groovy idea for an adventure, reimagine the fate of Lantan as not the sunken city of Atlantis, but Rapture from BioShock. Being a huge fan of this game, I wanted in on making this and perhaps helping to run it. Now, I'm not a fan of the current version of the Realms by any means, but something I can't pass up something like this. The "sinking" was merely a trick upon Faerun so Lantan could submerge in a protected environment and evolve while the Spellplague tormented the lands. Perhaps they view the rest of Faerun as a bunch of parasites ignorant to the potential of science, while they toil away at their brilliant discoveries. The technologies and magicks evolved until this private utopia was complete, ruled by a competent system (not too unlike Andrew Ryan). Plus the council of twelve would make an interesting mirror to Ryan's inner circle. Magitech driven experiments lead to a wonderous new way of life during those 100 years, but ultimately leads to a similar fate as Rapture, but with the mutated freaks being of a more magical variety. Recently, weird things have happened in the seas nearing the "collapse" of Lantan and so the adventurers are hired to survey the area, only to stumble upon a bunch of shipwrecks surrounding an island off of Lantan'srest where Lantan used to be, with a ruined tower. Inside the power, some sort of magical portal on the end of what looks like a big tube, leading to the nightmarish New Lantan, a sort of Iron Kingdoms meets City of Rapture dystopia. I know this has probably been done before, but I'm eager to join the other DM in doing this as a one-shot, sandbox, or October/Halloween side-campaign. Comments? Ideas?

I've never played BioShock, but I've heard people liked it and I think it looks interesting.
I take it Andrew Ryan is a BioShock character?
Can't add much useful, beyond simple encouragement for you to continue with this idea.

My reply will be similar to Mr_M's as most PC/console games simply pass me by but I love the idea that the Lantanese chose to sink beneath the waves to create their own steampunk-like world. It's also a reminder that every change that was made in the post-Spellplague Realms is a hook for a campaign to either find out what really happened or to set things right.

Thanks for the replies, I just wish I wasn't the only fan of BioShock on these boards. To say it was liked is an understatement. It had great atmosphere, simple yet effective controls, and a captivating setting. To briefly fill in on the BioShock story for those interested... Spoiler:
Show
Long story short, BioShock is a deiselpunk-esque dystopian game set in the city of Rapture, a fallen underwater paradise which was made by a paranoid business man "Andrew Ryan". He wanted to make a utopia inspired by Objectivism. He quickly made business partners to help build it. But, one of his business partners, Frank Fontaine, wanted to take over Rapture for his own deeds. He did so by exploiting rising class frustration while also exploiting the popularity of super-power causing mutations built in Rapture called "Plasmids". Civil War broke out and Rapture went to hell. The main character arrives a year later after his plane crashes by a lighthouse containing the bathysphere to Rapture. Anyway, I talked with the DM again and he's coming up with ideas. We're thinking of using disappearances by Lantan's Rest, as well as weird mutated corpses and broken gadgets washing ashore as a lead in to the adventure. As for the Realms itself, I could say any era has the potential for hooks and ways to correct things. One of the tables I was at for a while rewrote Maztica and made it a lot more awesome (as a conflict over divine power foretold by Maztican prophecy, leading to attempts to create peace and understanding after a war broke out between not just Maztican nations but divine churches in Faerun as well. The campaign ended in a new island being formed as a mage run "utopia" that offers teachings in Pluma magic and Faerunian magic that's accessible from Faerun and Maztica.)

That sounds like a fun video game. A little creepy too.

The other DM got back to me, this will likely be a Halloween one-shot/mini-campaign. Whether or not I'm going to help run it, I don't know. But still, this sounds like a blast.
