What would it be?

I'd like to see ability/skill checks where each point of ability score matters (similar to the roll under version of AD&D). I'd like to see a module for that--not the non-standardized "roll under" part, but the numerical results: an 18 is 40% more likely to succeed than a 10.

I'm not sure how exactly to do it, but I'd be surprised if it couldn't be done in a couple paragraphs worth of a sidebar, so I'm hoping it will show up as a module. If not, I'll strongly consider houseruling it--and I'm trying to resist the urge.

One thing I miss from 2e was how ability scores started doing special things once you got above 18, to represent their supernatural heights, beyond natural human ability. Constitution gave regeneration, while Intelligence gave immunity to low-level illusions. Having a 20 Wisdom felt really special in that edition. Now, not so much.

oh hell yeah, but I don't know if that'd be my one thing... damn this is a hard question.

Ooh, tough choice. It's hard to disagree with the OP (ability checks as d20 + ability score against DCs ranging from 15 to 35). Taking that one as a given, then, I'll go with the half-level scaling from 4E.

Because a level 17 fighter should have the same chance to hit another level 17 fighter as a level 3 fighter has to hit another level 3 fighter.
The metagame is not the game.

I wouldn't say its my one thing, either. It's just the first thing that came to mind after reading the original post.

To d20ise the 2nd ed ones. d20+ ability score works vs DC20, the same as roll under your score.

Reducing a character to a list of dice rolls and modifiers is not role playing*

THACO

Yep, definately THACO.

THACO was great, because not everybody could calculate whether or not they hit as well as I could, so it made me feel superior.

OK, seriously then:  a PC not needing a bonus coming from every stat to be considered a good character, with stats with no bonuses still being meaningful.  Is that two things?

I read the thread title, and came here to say that "roll under" would probably be my one thing. No fair asking the question and answering it for me, OP!

I'd bring back the rule from late in 1e AD&D that Field and Full Plate Armor offered the wearer 1-2 points of DR per die of damage rolled in addition to providing an already high Armor Class.
