As time passes and the flaws are discovered, yeah, I've noted that it tends to be cyclic.
very true. And after 3 months, the flaws are not just "discovered", they're getting to be annoyances and agravations.

Yes there are deffinate highs and lows. It comes in trends. For a while everyone was on skills, then bounded accuracy, then fighter's out of combat stuff.
It comes and goes.

+1 to... the entire thread, I guess?
I think we have a few posters who "overreact". A lot. Loudly. In nearly every thread. For pages.
I think we also have a few posters who can't keep their "X was [insert phrase meaning 'something DDN shouldn't support because it's bad for either a stated reason or implied reasons']" in their pants, as it were. A lot. Loudly (though less loudly than that other group, honestly). In nearly every thread. For pages.
But I honestly think it's better than I've seen the forums at several points (not just for DDN, but the D&D forums in general).
A new packet would be great, but then the forums will just be inundated with a new round of "I don't like X" and "X is the end of the world" and "I like X" and "Stop complaining about X" and "Why does everyone always say the sky is falling". And I'm... not really sure that's a better tone to the forums.

The tone may not be quantitatively better, but it does sound different.

I tried something similar months ago on the 4e boards. Miserable failure. Don't get your hopes up too much, but it could still happen. Just be aware that not everyone will cooperate.
We summoned a devil once. All we used was the D&D books, too. It was pretty kwazy.

First, an experience from a game I played in a few years back. Our DM didn't like 3.5 as a whole but liked parts of it. So he hands us a big ass rules packet for his modified FR campaign, complete with quotes from important NPC's on the front. I can't remember most of the HRs, just that some how gods like Cyric and Bhaal existed at the same time, despite the obvious problems there. In the end the game became a problem more because of the railroading than the HRs, but it ended with this classic line, after our ranger tried to disarm the strange woman following us WITH HIS BOW: DM: You just killed (insert random noble sounding name here) JP: Was she important? Jack: Dude, she's quoted on the front of the rules packet!

Cut the last encounter on your way out after dealing with the Darth. He's the BBEG. Treat him as such. Play up that Darth Revan is THAT much of a badarse. When the shuttle landed, I had no less than 13 JEDI MASTERS step off the shuttle. The PCs were slack-jawed. After the meetup with Bastila (as she's carrying Revan's body), only TWO jedi masters remained with her. Let me tell you, the player whining about not getting to fight Revan himself shut up pretty quickly when he saw that.

Given that the worst "problems" come from a handful of posters (maybe two handfuls, at best), having "not everyone" cooperate really won't ever be enough.

Over the past several weeks I've noticed a marked increase in the amount of flaming, trolling, and overall hostility that people are showing towards each other on this board. Can we please not do this? It's really unbecoming and pointless. We all just want to play D&D, right?
I don't hear anyone saying 'herehere.' Everyone seems to think they're innocent. I have no idea if I've ever been hostile. I'll just say here LordofKhyber that I'll try not to be.
It's noble of you to post this, so thank you. Now, can we talk about d&dnext?

this thread seems like its gunna get real productive soon...
seriously though this thread already has vitriol leaking into in it nice and passive agressive amounts.
I think someone earlier said it best. A lot of people get too attached to their ideas and take it personally when those ideas are criticized.

I think my reaction to the vitriol could best be summed up by my feelings about Next as a whole... "Meh."
I've long since concluded that this game is not going to be for me or the people I play with (and I'm okay with that... I'm in several well-established groups who often play long out-of-print games so playing 4E for the next ten years or so isn't a burden on me in any respect) so I'm mostly here just to watch the theory-crafting and scrounge the fan proposals (90% of which are far better than what's coming out of playtest packets) for houserule ideas. Having everyone agree would kill those things dead.

Interesting responses littered about. In my own opinion, the truly contentious issue is that an easily identifiable group of contributors only posts when they feel moved to 'correct' a mode of thinking, or show someone the 'error' in their outlook. Their approach to the community comes from a place of devisiveness, and it nurtures a hostile atmosphere where submitting a thought results in the same feedback one would receive from willingly sticking their hand in a bear trap. If we can be objective, there is a serious amount of bullying that goes on around here, and there's absolutely no tolerance for people who have a more closed view by virtue of their having very little exposure to the larger gaming community. I see taunting, baiting, and trolling going on all the time, and it creates an atmosphere that really discourages people from contributing. There's an incredible amount of examples where 'X forumgoer with a dozen or so posts under his belt' makes a statement, only to be immediately descended upon by 'Y forumgoer with thousands of posts under his belt' who self-righteously acts as though his snide contributions are going to show X forumgoer the badwrongness of everything he thinks, wants, and desires. People come herely solely to grind axes, it seems. It's sad, and it's a huge disservice to the hobby.
