Yes they get their four class granted skills when you take the background away.  Then since the fighter is still getting a background, the fighter also has 4 skills and a trait.  Yes the rogue is better with his skills from skill mastery (a mechanic I desperately wish to see a change to), but the fighter has the combat power over the rogue.  The rogue would need 3 or 4 feats to rival the fighter in combat capability.  While the fighter would need 3 or 4 feats to rival the rogue out of combat.

I really don't think that's going to happen or would be a good thing to do. Non-Fighter players are going to be up in arms at the idea that their characters' backstories aren't going to be mechanically represented in any way.

You do realize im talking about your own table right not the game in general right?

1. Just House Rule It is not a solution to poor design.
2. Non-Fighter players at my table would be up in arms too.

1 It isn't houseruling it is using and tuning the optional dials provided by the system.  Literally if you are unprepared to do this 5e is probably not the game for you everyone will need to operate the dials to how they like the game to operate.  "House ruling" like this is basically the basis of the 5e system.  That is the big thing 5e brings to the table in terms of editions.

2 Ya but you say they have enough to show their skills and capabilities from their backstory without backgrounds.  You see that the disparity is that fighters need it while they get enough from their classes.  Then like the fighter if they want more skill capability than their class provides they need to use feats.  It literally balances it out.  Essentially you are toning down skills across the board and then giving fighters a collection of class features to even it up.  If you feel it needs to go the other way give fighter's two backgrounds.  That is another possible setting on this dial.

1. That's Advanced, not Basic or Standard. Not everyone wants to play Advanced. And it's still a massive gamble that the same fanbase that quite often refused to allow certain splatbooks *ToB, cough* will play nicely with the dials.

2. They're still going to call bullshit. Now, 2 backgrounds works as a kludge, but it's not very evocative. I'd go with the Basic version of Fighters get Advantage on Strength checks and build from there. Maybe all Fighters get a Knowledge (out of Warfare/Geography/Dungeoneering), Athletics, Survival/Diplomacy/Streetwise? Or maybe Fighters get advantage on Athletics checks, feats of strength/endurance, and Intimidate/Sense Motive?
