IDK. I like more HPs at level one, to eliminate the whole "low levels are minefields" feeling I had with 2e and 3e. I think what I'd like to see is the following as a variant rule:
Your HPs for level one are generated by adding your Con score (instead of the Con mod) to the maximized result of the die roll. After that, your Con mod becomes a minimum result for your HP rolls as you level.
Exactly like the 1st Packet (the best one); another option is to start characters of with an extra HD or two (like 1st Ed monks and rangers, and SWSE).
Was that like the first packet? The earliest one I still have saved is the 11/13/12 packet, and that one adds HP each level for Con mod which is different than what I suggested.
In the 1st packet (May/June last year) characters start with Con score plus 1 class HD (average, rounded up) for HP at first level, and gain 1 class HD of HP for levelling, with a minimum number of HP equal to your Con mod.
The 1st packet also has juicy lore/monster fluff, goblins come from Faerie, grey oozes are psionic.
