I was going though the Skills and Backgrounds and Classes.
there was one thing that I was confused with is the fact that all I found out if you get 4 skills only....or am I missing somthing

You get 4 skills plus whatever skills your race provides (halflings and humans get none) plus whatever your class provides (fighters and barbarians get none)

The oddity could be anything you want, within reason. Its a great way to put an interesting story hook in for your character. For example, it could be a text fragment in an unidentified script. The DM could use that as an adventure hook if the party gets ahold of the codex which deciphers the script and finds out the text fragment provides clues as to where a lost temple is.
