and as said reaching 18 with humans, 20 at level 8 is already too fast to reach the cap
If they are going to make stats max so early, then why not get rid of the stupid ability modifier system (the one that states that Odd numbers are garbage)
I agree, I much prefer AD&D's method of a stat is +1 per value starting at 15. So dex 15 = +1, 16 = +2, 17 = +3. Of that, that makes min-maxing that much more appealing , but that's if you use point buy, you could relax the point buy a bit to allow 16 max instead of 15, that'd do it.
But then they should remove humans getting +1 to everything and give them only +1 to two stats, place as you wish. Still min-max friendly, but less OP compared to other races.
And humans can only start with a 17 max at level 1, not 18, they removed the +2 to one stat in the latest packet.
What I'd do is leave the 15 standard point buy alone, and fix the racial stats, as well as make odd numbers count. If you keep +1 to hit as you hit even numbers, then you could get +1 to damage on odd numbers only, to make it worthwhile but not as jumpy.
E.g.
11 = +1 to damage 12 = +1 to damage +1 to hit 13 = +2 to damage +1 to hit 14 = +2 to damage +2 to hit 15 = +3 to damage, +2 to hit 16 = +3 damage +3 to hit 17 = +4 damage +3 to hit 18 = +4 damage +4 to hit 19 = +5 damage +4 to hit 20 = +5 damage +5 to hit
This could work for Dex as well. Plus, this is an easy house rule that can be dropped in or removed at any time, since the to-hit bonus is really what matters much more and is the same as the current even-only scheme

A cap of 20 is only too low if you allow your players to start too high. I've lately taken to the notion of having the players roll 2d6+3 for attributes. I think it should give me the results I want.

Well my OPINION is 20 is too high. Human max should be 18.

I agree that it is too easliy reachable. I would love to see all race and class bonuses abbolished to make an 18-20 AMAZING again.
I agree on the outcome (making 18-20 amazing again) but I think this could be reached much more easily by changing the default ability scores roling methods and lowering the "standard array" to something like 15 13 12 11 10 8
maybe 3D6 instead of 4D6 drop lowest
2d6+4 works well.

It is not too low. It is exactly what it should be. With a stat array your highest stat is a 15 before race/class mods. Once you max a stat your growth becomes lateral. They should NOT raise that bar. I do think that the max stat rolled should become 15 ala stat arrays and point buy, but whatever. I won't play in a game that rolls stats anyway, so maybe I should not talk on that topic.
You probably don't roll your HP at level up, do you.

Why would you do something silly like that?
