Highlights: Paladin, Ranger and/or Druid appearing in Next packet.
Excellent news!
Exploration rules in the next packet (which are optional).
Excellent news!
They're currently focusing on stuff that isn't going to see the light of day for a bit but mearls (spells, monsters, etc.).
Um, ok. I guess I can be glad they're thinking forward. Hopefully that means decent ideas on how to incorporate Multiclassing, Prestige Classing as well.
Fighter needs one last revision to its attack mechanic, but they're happy with it. People are happy with the cleric the rogue, and the wizards so mostly tinkering.
Ok, this one makes me shake my head. I do like how the FIghter is progressing.......up til about 10th level. From there, It seems I'll be forced into a Prestige Class to actually do fun stuff or have more options. Going straight FIghter 20 isn't going to be somthing I'll strive for. That's a shame.
Might revise damage output scaling for fighter/rogue.
Another idea is to make monsters a bit tougher, so that the damage doesn't need to be scaled at all.
Making TWF an easier option to do.
Yes please. My suggestion: Take the 2nd Packet's TWF feat, turn it into the way everyone fights with Two-Weapons, and have the TWF feat allow you to wield two one-handed weapons. Completely remove the -2 to Attack rolls. At this point, your just penalizing the concept rather than adding any sort of balance.
Races coming up: Half-orc, half-elf, gnome.
Excellent news!
Planetouched no time soon (publicly)
*sigh* well I can only hope that options like the Tiefling and Aasimar/Deva will be ready for release.

I'dprefer the barbarian remain barbarian and not change to berserker.

Renaming barbarian to berserker would be great. I recall a neat Dragon magazine article about animal totem berserker kits for Barbarians way back in the mists of time.
One option is several paths within Barbarian class, one of them being Berserker.
Druids and Rangers are my favourites, so Yay!
Hopefully this goes with some more nature based spells such as Animal Friendship, Entangle, Plant Growth, Plant Door, Speak with Animals. Later they can throw in the force multiplier Natures Ally stuff, and Boosts like Bears Endurance etc.
I hope two weapon fighting is streamlined, but not easier to do. The current difficulty is right.
Half Elves and Half Orks.. well the current presumption for most gamers and novels is that these are Half Humans. But I can since Gnomes share their environments with Elves and Dwarves, why not Gnome-Elves or Gnome-Dwarves? On the same line Bugbear-Orks, HobGoblin-Orks.

So, they are changing the name in order to not misrepresent and defame the historical Barbarian.
Ok. But then they need to make sure they dont misrepresent and defame the historical Berserkr.
Switching from one silly stereotype to another silly stereotype ... is equally problematic.
Now based on the podcast, the designers seem informed about the historical/mythological Berserkar. Especially the idea it is a spiritual tradition where their mind becomes the mind of ferocious animal, during the rage-trance. A form of savage shamanism.
This spiritual tradition includes other effects, such as sending ones mindforce (hugr) aura (hamr) outofbody in the form of an animal, or even physically shapechanging ones body into an animal, relating to the tradition of the werewolf.
In fact, the designers have even discussed these more shamanistic aspects, and have said there will be *options* for “skinchanging”, physical shapechanging. This word “skin” relating to the Norse word for an animal pelt (hamr), which by extension refers to the “shape” of a living being, ultimately the concept of a shape of the mind-body aura, relating to a perceived self-image in the context of the spiritual trance.
The Berserkar preserve an animistic spiritual tradition.
It seems when the options are in place, it will be possible to build a gaming version of a Berserkr, as well as use the class to build savage warriors as other cultures understand them. If so, it seems fine to switch the name from Barbarian to Berserker. Not all Berserkar knew how to shapechange, only the ones who were “shape-strong” (hamsterkr) ( ≈ high Charisma) did.
I'm convinced. I mean, I already agreed, but I agree even more now. Make Berserker the class and let Barbarian be the default background.

Going with the paladin and ranger seem like going the easy route. They should be easy to do. Releasing some of the harder classes soon would be a better idea (bard, druid, sorcerer, and maybe the warlord). Those are the ones that will be hard to make balanced yet effective while also appealing to fans of all editions.
I'm kinda annoyed that 100% of the PC focus still seems to be on classes. Now we've hard time to play and digest, they should take a second look at backgrounds and races to make sure they're still doing what people want and hitting the mark. Classes took the focus earlier but now we've seen and played with the options enough to have a better idea what works and what doesn't.

Absolutely no mention of the warlock nor the sorcerer (or its replacement). Would think that they would have reintroduced those classes at this point.

I think at one time they mentioned that after level 10 the rules for higer level play would kick in, and there would be multiple styles to advance from level 10. so maybe the fighter will get some more things after level 10 but they are dependent on the playstyle you chose

The problem is the barbarian hasn't been barbaric since 3.5e. In 4th ed, Pathfinder and the playtest the Barbarian is able to read and write and is as much barbaric as a college frat boy.
IMO beserker captures the flavour of the character without any of the baggage.
Are the 4 main classes going to get an overhaul to have as many cool class features and unique abilities as the monk & barb?
Mike Mearls: yes, especially at high levels
That's a relief. I was worried they considered the fighter done. As powerful as the combat surge is. It's also boring.

I hope the designers of the “Bard” pay close attention to the Irish/Scottish derivation of this word. It seems complex, because there are court songsters who arent Bards, but I hope the emphasis is on the magical power of a song of praise versus the terrible harm of a song of satire.
