So far, we've seen six and (two half) classes and four races. For those of you who have favourite characters covered by the playtest, how well can you recreate them? How well does 5e let you emulate or reimagine old favorites? Can you do it at low levels or only higher levels? Does the addition of background help create any characters?

F-111 Interdictor Long (200+ squares) distance ally teleporter. With some warlord stuff. Broken in a plot way, not a power way. Thought Switch Higher level build that grants upto 14 attacks on turn 1. If your allies play along, it's broken. Elven Critters Crit op with crit generation. 5 of these will end anything. Broken. King Fisher Does an excellent job at keeping an enemy disabled in a few ways. Strong. Boominator Fun catch-22 booming blade build with either strong or completely broken damage depending on your reading. Very Distracting Warlock Lot's of dazing and major penalties to hit. Overpowered. Pocket Protector Pixie Stealth Knight. Maximizing the defender's aura by being in an ally's/enemy's square. Yakuza NinjIntimiAdin: Perma-stealth Striker that offers a little protection for ally's, and can intimidate bloodied enemies. Very Strong. Chargeburgler with cheese Ranged attacks at the end of a charge along with perma-stealth. Solid, could be overpowered if tweaked. Void Defender Defends giving a penalty to hit anyone but him, then removing himself from play. Can get somewhat broken in epic. Scry and Die Attacking from around corners, while staying hidden. Moderate to broken, depending on the situation. Skimisher Fly in, attack, and fly away. Also prevents enemies from coming close. Moderate to Broken depending on the enemy, but shouldn't make the game un-fun, as the rest of your team is at risk, and you have enough weaknesses. Indestructible Simply won't die, even if you sleep though combat. Sir Robin (Bravely Charge Away) He automatically slows and pushes an enemy (5 squares), while charging away. Hard to rate it's power level, since it's terrain dependent. Death's Gatekeeper A fun twist on a healic, making your party "unkillable". Overpowered to Broken, but shouldn't actually make the game un-fun, just TPK proof. Death's Gatekeeper mk2, (Stealth Edition) Make your party "unkillable", and you hidden, while doing solid damage. Stronger then the above, but also easier for a DM to shut down. Broken, until your DM get's enough of it. Domination and Death Dominate everything then kill them quickly. Only works @ 30, but is broken multiple ways. Battlemind Mc Prone-Daze Protecting your allies by keeping enemies away. Quite powerful. The Retaliator Getting hit deals more damage to the enemy then you receive yourself, and you can take plenty of hits. Heavy item dependency, Broken. Dead Kobold Transit Teleports 98 squares a turn, and can bring someone along for the ride. Not fully built, so i can't judge the power Psilent Guardian Protect your allies, while being invisible. Overpowered, possibly broken Unnamed Avenger|Runepriest/Hammer of Vengance Do lot's of damage while boosting your teams. Strong to slightly overpowered. Charedent BarrageA charging ardent. Fine in a normal team, overpowered if there are 2 together, and easily broken in teams of 5. Super Knight A tough, sticky, high damage knight. Strong. Super Duper Knight Basically the same as super knight, only far more broken. Mora, the unkillable avenger Solid damage, while being neigh indestuctable. Overpowered, but not broken. Swordburst Maximus At-Will Close Burst 3 that slide and prones. Protects allies with off actions. Strong, possibly over powered with the right party.

Favorite Character:
Ashkelon, a red dragon who was cursed/geased to live his life in a human's body and atone for his deeds. RP wise he adventured only to look for ways to increase his dragonhoard. He hated other adventurers because they stole his dragonhoard making him a very poor dragon. Everyone knows that the size of your hoard is directly proportional to your dragonliness. He wanted to be evil, but the curse prevented him from doing so, making him begrudgingly offer his help to those in need.
Mechanically, in he was a Dragonborn Sorcerer|Barbarian who looked mostly human. He could breathe fire, had skin as tough as a dragons hide (Strength bonus to AC in light armor), and could enter powerful dragonrages or blast his foes with fire. He also had powerful claws (reflavored unarmed strikes from MC: Monk).
My current 4e PC is Rael, a human who had a storm elemental bound to him by mad scientists working for a powerful nationstate who wanted to create supersoldier. He want to take revenge on the nationstate for turning him into a monster.
Mechanically he is a Genasi battlemind. (mindspike refluffed to stormspike). All of his melee attacks deal lightning damage, he has a few means of flight, he can create mini-tornadoes, and he can move as fast as lightning. He is also completely unreliant on magic items for his abilities, as everyhting comes from the storm elemental bound to him (feats, race, paragon path, etc). Basically, it is impossible to recreate either of these PCs in 5e.

Point the first: When you say "favorite character" are you talking about the character you played a few months ago in that one campaign that you really were having fun with, or are you talking about such-and-such character from that one book or movie? If the first, refer to my second point if you are having difficulties. Also, remember to stay true to your character concept does not always require a complete inclusion of all the little mechanical bits. Just because your character was "stealthy shadow guy attacks from the shadows" doesn't mean you need "super shadow feat" in order to authentically re-create your character. Go for theme, not for specifics. If it is the second, well, not all book/movie/show characters make good D&D characters.
Point the second: Saying that you can or cannot create a certain character in D&DN-Basic isn't quite a good representation for what D&DN-Basic is supposed to to. It's not supposed to be the versatile, do-everything-well RPG. You should have fightery-fighters, clericy-clerics, and themes, archetypes, and ideas common to earlier versions of D&D.

My two favorite characters were bards and/or warlords in various previous additions. So currently I can't recreate them, and it's yet to be seen if the bard class will accomodate the one, and the bard and/or warlord class will accomodate the other. If I got really creative I might be able to make one or both using the Rogue, but it'd be a stretch and probably mechanically non-optimized.
I briefly played a halfing scout in 3.5 who was lots of fun; I think I could recreate him well enough with the Rogue using the Scout scheme.
I want "punch magic in the face" to be a maneuver

I can make several of them, but not all, since multiclassing and the Paladin don't exist yet. Some should be able to be created with the Standard ruleset, while others will probably require Advanced rules.
Kitharis the Elf fighter/wizard, no. Talyne, half-elf Sorc/Paladin, no. Elspeth, human fighter in heavy plate who uses a greatsword, yep. Selena, human cleric -- yep. Fallon, 2nd-story specialist (rogue with lots of sneak and acrobatics), not too bad. Dalin, dwarven axe-wielder (with a mug of ale in his other hand most of the time), sure. Iris, Halfling specialty priest of Tymora (Luckbringer), pretty much, if I still keep the parts from Faiths & Avatars.
I haven't made a PC that used a really exotic race. Backgrounds don't have much to do with it. They add flavour, but nothing I couldn't add along with choosing skills and creating a trait on my own. With one exception, I don't have to wait for later levels since I don't rely on abilities that come later to have a viable character concept. The exception is Talyne, who was a straight Sorc until certain things happened that prompted her to petition her deity to become a Paladin.
In memory of wrecan and his Unearthed Wrecana.5e should strongly stay away from "I don't like it, so you can't have it either."

Some are impossible, Ranger, Warlord and multiclassing don't exist yet. Ellie's fairly easy, a mage with a smattering of clerical spellcasting; from 2e, a Cleric/Mage dual class. Hermel is a pretty vanilla Fighter in AD&D terms, but he had decent out-of-combat abilities due to NWPs and a kit; it's not practical to recreate him in Next and get the sort of effect he had.
These, in the day when heaven was falling, The hour when earth's foundations fled, Followed their mercenary calling, And took their wages, and are dead.
Playing: Mongoose Traveller GMing: Barbarians of Lemuria Planning: Reclaiming Neverwinter, a 4e D&D campaign

Theric Van'Doran 18th level human fighter Grand mastery Longs word. Nope the rules wont allow for the skill to reflect this accurately. Put P.F. will- sad. Fulcren MacKrey Human fighter from the Celts Handbook- Yes Barbarian We have a way to go yet to open this system up to creativity. It is still somewhat lacking. I can't play my Hobgoblin yet either.

Favourite PC. Either a one-shot or a lengthy campaign or anything in-between. Less so "crazy built I tried once just because" but more "I loved playing that character and would love to play them again sometime."
