Are we actually talking about getting rid of a class called Fighter?
Some people are. I don't think that it should go away but I think it needs more flavor and abilities.

No
The quest is to find something mechanically and fluffy that gives it more umph. Probably through Standard or Advanced dials and modules.

I think the base warrior-bad-ass is enough (Lancelot, etc).

Are we actually talking about getting rid of a class called Fighter?
Not really because we all know it is in impossibility, but it is an idea thats come about.

problem...paladin will likely cover lancelot better than fighter will.
That is to me the main crux of the problem.

Not at all, Galahad was a Paladin, Lancelot was a kick-ass Fighter.

I've been talking about doing just that very thing for many years now. It's the most broad-scoped, aimless, generic class in the game. Always has been. It tries to be too many things to too many people, which usually leaves it lacking in pretty much everything (the number one reason that every edition aside from 4E has the fighter trailing behind the other classes in regards to options).
The 2 core goals of DDN: 1. Create a version of D&D that embraces the enduring, core elements of the game. 2. Create a set of rules that allows a smooth transition from a simple game to a complex one. - Mike Mearls

Ah, I don't see it that way, I see the Fighter as Conan (no, not the "Barbarian"...), Elric, Lancelot, Fafhrd, Boromir, and so many others.

huzzah for 4E
To some of us a blank canvas has as much power as a masterpiece...well maybe not that much power.
