Er.  Not exclusively mechanically, but to exclude mechanically completely is also wrong.

Mechanics and fluff are both part of it.

When I think of soul of a class, I am thinking along the lines of what a player breaths into the character.  When I think of mechanics I think of ice cream.

Chocolate - Cleric
Vanilla - Fighter
Strawberry - Rogue
Neopolitan - Wizard

Toppings - Standard Rules

Monster Trucks - Advanced Variants

How exactly would you go about rectifying it?

Some idears

  1. Go back to 4e armor prices.
  2. Add traits to armor, shields and weapons (DR and vs DR)
  3. Cross proficiencies for type and individual weapons so if you are lvl 2 proficient in one sword you get an overall boost to all swords.
  4. Combine weapon and attack speed so they trigger multiple attacks in multiples of ten.
  5.  Give ftrs the ability to train or lend martial skills to other classes. I always thought combat trainer would be a slick feat path.
  6. Bring back rate of fire

This is one of the reasons that I think the Fighting Style feature needs to be so much more than just a collection of maneuvers. They should come with special features and abilities that truly evoke the theme of the specific Fighter archetype that you're creating. For example, let the Duelist get a bump or two on the damage dice of Finesse weapons, better AC or resistance in light or no armor, a movement bump, and so on. Essentially, let the Style be the "soul" of the class that, as Mand suggests, is missing from the Fighter in every edition.

I don't see fighter as vanilla- i see it as the person who got to the ice cream box and found none in there.

Thats cuz the Monk, Rogue, and Barbarian got real up in there with the MDD.

But you're right, it is a matter of perception.

Warrior Rogue and Mage has an interesting way to create character concept.  However that is a classless system.

Fighter is the waffle cone. Superior to the cup or regular cone but no ice cream.
Orzel, Halfelven son of Zel, Mystic Ranger, Bane to Dragons, Death to Undeath, Killer of Abyssals, King of the Wilds.

Are we actually talking about getting rid of a class called Fighter?
