As i previously stated, i am a fan of skill dice but... one thing bugs me is that: let's say youre level, idk, 14 and now you gain a skill you previously lacked... all of a sudden youre a level 14 genius with it??? Would it be overcomplicating the issue to say, ok, skill dice follow their own leveling track (i.e. a skill youve had since level 1 is at your character level in regards to skill dice but if you gained a skill between level 9 & 10 and now youre level 14 that skill is only level 5)...?
I don't know that it would overcomplicate it for everyone, but it would overcomplicate it for me. I'm willing to give up that level of realism in excange for simpler play, especially with new players. If everyone at the table knows the levels of all the PCs (which isn't too difficult, as they'll mostly be the same level), it's very easy to make sure the right die is used for skills when all the skills use the same die. In fact, between our last two sessions, our group went from 1st to 2nd level in the game we're currently playing; I caught another player picking up a d4 for one of his PC's skills, so I was able to remind him that we now get a d6. And it was a big deal, because he rolled a 6, ending up with a success. If his skills had used different dice, I would have assumed he knew which die he was supposed to use, and the best he could have gotten was a 4, ending in failure, instead (he didn't do so hot with his d20 roll, and that those 2 points made the difference).
