As DM, I hate dealing with 4e treasure, it's a chore, did it for one campaign, not doing it again. So, every time you level up, you "learn" a new item equal to your new level+1 or less. Weapons and implements auto upgrade at the start of each half-tier, armor and neck items auto upgrade at the end of each half-tier. Any other upgradeable items auto upgrade when you hit their new item level. I hand out additional story based alternate rewards and consumables as I see fit.
I like this. My current DM started using the inherant bonus system. Still seems to lag a tad and takes the more interesting combos that make PC's tick off the table

I need some of you guys to come DM out in my area. I can't tell you how many times i've looked at my character @lvl 8-10 and just saw a mishmosh of useless items and the only time i've ever had the appropriate items was when i've built a PC at a higher level.
"I'm so sorry none of you are using axes or hammers and you just found a long lost Dwarven treasure trove but all you find are DWARVEN WEAPONS." "Transfer Enchantment, not in this village, maybe if you get to make it to a city someplace."
DM once. Do treasure correctly. No one will be willing to put up with the DMs who do it wrong ever again.

I just MYRE it ala LFR. Each 4 hours of game time is a MYRE. All characters need to be LFR legal.
This does a few interesting things: There's a set of fairly reasonable standards already written up. I don't really need to stat out treasure or XP. Just run fun adventures that challenge the players without going overboard. If a campaign goes ka-boom for whatever reason, someone needs to leave or someone isn't there for a few weeks, there's LFR as a safety valve - they can take their 7th level character with about 21 MYREs into a game and not have issues(as an example). If for some reason I'm desperate for an adventure because I was too busy that week, I can grab an LFR mod and slot it in.
The only downside really is that treasure isn't quite as rich as LFR is, but LFR is very high magic for 4e anyway, so not that big of a deal.

1. What is MYRE?
2. I've never run(or played in) a LFR adventure or LAIR, for that matter, at the store i work for. We really have no "gaming community" to speak of, something i'm working towards building, so it generally boils down to the same 4-6 of us in some home game that our DM(s) have cooked up, and they each have had there own standards which they have run there games by.
@Alcestis- I've never DM'ed and really have never had the desire to do so. I'm not trying to sound selfish or dickish but some of us just don't really have what it takes to DM. Let me stop you all before we start with the "how do you know if you don't try" as i've heard it before and i'll just reiterate, i've really not had a desire, but you never know.

MYRE = My Realms Adventure packets. Basically, you get the same xp/gold/magic items that you would get for playing a standard LFR mod, except you don't get any special magic item selection options. But instead of using a set LFR mod, you make it up the adventure. And there are rules for starting up at 1st, 5th, 8th, and 11th.
So in other words, run the campaign you want to run anyway. Give out set XP/treasure at the end of the mod assuming everything goes well based on the level of the characters. Let the players pick either common magic items of level +2 or uncommon of level with a number of up to their level at the end of mods, max of 1 item per mod. And they get gold to simply buy common magic items if they want.
And if your game blows up or say you move or any other number of reasons why things can go bad, you have a legal LFR character that can be played in other LFR games...

That's an interesting idea MWaO. I generally insert Schroedinger's Magic Items in to my campaigns as loot the big-bad took from earlier, un-named foes.
