"Rare" does not equal "Balanced". A wizard who can smash planets together for fun only twice a year or so, but can't hit a damn thing with a dagger for the rest of the year, doesn't exactly work out to a zero sum.

or maybe people want instant gradification and cant hadle the challenge of understanding when they decide to play a class that it comes with an up and downside
And if that's true? Still makes it a poor design policy if most people don't want to play D&D that way.

which spell can "smash Planets" there isnt one from my knowledge of the game. a spell is a tool in the right hands its an awsome thing and in the wrong hands its not. you cant change the entire system like that due to this. every single class in the game has a downside and every player has a class that is special to him or her. i never could get a mage to high enough level to cast earthshaking spells in 1 or 2nd edition thats not a balance issue thats my issue i could easily get a thief up there and no mage would stop me from stealing something i wanted in game. the seperation of player skill vs class design vs dm/player interaction should be considered before a change is made. thats my opinion

Depends on what you define as a planet. If you define a planet as a largish ball of dirt floating in space, then meteor swarm fits that description pretty well.

well then if a majority of players ignore game mechanics designed to add balance and controll the enviroment how can you say it was unbalanced as designed. it was unbalanced by house rules and that should in no way reflect on the class as it is written in the rules
If everyone breaks your rules, maybe they're not good rules.
You can't have it both ways.
If house rules are not a valid way to fix the problems of the prior editions, then you can't turn around and blame house rules for creating the problems of those editions.
Either discuss the rules as written (no house rules) or discuss the rules as played (including common house rules to address the problems.)

That's the truth. Plus a lot of people started playing as kids/teens and just skipped 2/3 of the game rules anyways since they were "too complicated". That said Wish was castable multiple times per day. The DMG also had additional penalties for casting spells such as aging, attribute loss etc.

How do bike racers have anything to do with D&D or Angels?
This has been a very confusing thread for me. Are we really saying the fighter is just a kid on a bike now?
No, the bike is a magic item and shouldn't be assumed, he's just a kid

I'm not saying that the system is bad because people don't play it the way the designers intended. That problem can be solved with clearer rules and expectations for DMs.
The system is bad because people don't want to play the game the way the designers intended. That problem is solved by making the game work closer to people's expectations.

Common house rules often fix one element by breaking another... uncommon house rules are what you really want, or better yet rare house rules that minimize changes while fixing issues in a consistant fashion but which retain the game identity. I was pretty good at making uncommon houserules but never managed the rare ones.
OK so that is an attempt to be funny.
