Why do people have a problem with fighters being able to fly?  At mid to high level play, you're routinely dealing with enemies that can fly, so why can't your player characters?

I used that as an example, and I shouldn't have.  Rather, I should have clarified.  There should be two types of fighters, one that can do all sorts of magical things and ones that cannot.  I'm not sure how to balance the two, but I definitely think the two should exist so people can play using these rules in their style or setting.

Don't get me wrong.  I'm not referring to you specifically or anything, but I have heard a similar mantra on the forums.  Some people tend to get in an uproar when the idea of giving a fighter things outside of the realm of reality.  I mean, the title of the topic is regarding just that.  So, I'm not blaming you or singling you out or anything. So, it's all good.

I know, and I appreciate the response.  I'm all for fighters being magical, but truly want to see both sides (and different styles of play) be encouraged.

When I play a fighter, I don't WANT to be able to fly.  The fighter is the character who relies on strength of arms, not on magic.

Certainly, but some people would like to have the choice to have abilities beyond strength of arms.  Having a choice for either would be ideal.  There's certainly no right or wrong way to play.

If flight is super common (as it has been in every edition except 4e) I would like to have fighters who can perform legendary feats of strength. This way a high level fighter could leap 50ft into the air and wrestle a flying creature to the ground.

I don't need a magical fighter, but I would like to have the option of creating a mythological one.

I agree that the choice should be there, but the choice should be in another class,  not the fighter.  A fighter who can wield magic is basically a gish, and should be handled either by multiclassing or by a swordmage/duskblade/bladesinger class.

I'd really like to know where this limited concept of the fighter came from because it certainly hasn't ever been true for D&D. 

IMO, since this is a D&D game and magic is a real force in the campaign world, it is only natural to expect such magic to be available to all classes.     I realy don't understand why people have a problem with fighters using magical items.   I know I would hate to give up my 2e fighter's boots of flying, ring of spell reflection, and helm of teleportation.       I've had too much fun with those magical items and a lot of good battles.        I can understand that there might be some rare story arcs in which fighters are out to prove their worth without the use of such magic, but I really don't see the point of forcing that concept on every fighter in the game.  Not every fighter in the game should be restricted to strength of arms alone.   Magic should be used by all classes in the game, the only difference is how each class accesses that magic (directly or indirectly).     I think that if you want your fighter to prove his worth without magic then that should be a difficult task, it shouldn't be an easy feat in a world with magic.

In a game where the assumed baseline is inherently magical, with giant flying reptiles capable to living millenia and breathing fire and being smarter than any human, owl-bear hybrids, and dudes who look like what happens when a boar and woman had a child, being a class that is bound entirely by what people in our mundane reality can do, something is wrong. Just in order to keep up with the least of the magical entities requires H. sapiens fighterus to rely on magical items. H. sapiens wizardius gets to roll out of bed in his jammies and rework the entirety of reality and its okay because he's magic and the fighter isn't.
