You know. Perhaps instead of calling the Barbarian ability Rage, maybe the barbarian class feature could be called "Transformation".

Perhaps, "Badass Mode"?

"Transform" doesn't feel quite right.

Regardless of what it's called, the term used is just a rules-keyword that can mean whatever the hell any given player wants it to mean.

Call it "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", and it still does the same damn thing.  Only now it costs more to print.

I am fine rolling the warden into the barbarian. I enjoyed playing a Storm Genasi Storm Warden, a Shifter Berserker, and a Dragon Sorc|Barbarian hybrid very much in 4e. The barbarian is probably my favorite D&D class overall.

That being said, I would prefer a shift away from daily resources. I like the idea of "rage points" that accumulate over the battle (when you get hit, when an ally gets hit, when you hit an enemy, depending on build). You can spend these rage points to perform powerful strikes or enter berserk rages/guardian forms. I do not want to see Rage x/day.

+1

Rages/day is stupid. I really like the idea of building rage points or fury over the course of a combat, like the Iron Heroes Berserker class.

And people will complain that's too MMOish, because that's the rage mechanic from WoW's warrior...because people is...silly

So... a mechanic used in 80s videogames is perfectly acceptable, but one from 90s videogames is not?

Dailies are just as 'gamey' as a super-meter.

Idiots like that who say "hurr durr 3e=Diablo" or "4e=WoW" are just holding back the hobby. Obviously there are going to be similarities between tabletop rpgs and fantasy video games because they usually draw inspiration from the same source material.

Indeed. But those "Rage" mechanics, if I'm reading them correctly, work just like Super meters from fighting games of the 90's and beyond. Hence, "90's videogame".

I think the benefit for cost method mentioned in the article works fine. Combine that with 3e's rage duration. 3+Con mod rounds of Rage/Transformation/BeastMode, one minute of fatigue. All at-will.
