An interesting and thoughtful opinion.

Why on earth would anyone think they were your words?

My point, You are back tracking. One moment WoTc "isn't running" the RPG race and the next Competition is heating up and they are "in the fight". Which is your actual opinion? Is Pathfinder running alone since 2010 or not? Of course they aren't! But you insinuate this in your posts, in fact say it outright. Rediculous. I was pointing out the contradiction inyour obviously emotional defense of 4e. and Wotc's buisness practices. Either WOTc has dropped off the face of the earth and quit / or not and have been getting  outsold at least in the last year by it's competitors.

Er

What?

What I'm saying is that for the vast majority of D&D's history, nobody was even in the same league as D&D as far as tabletop roleplaying games.  Meaning, basically until the last five years, they were not running in a race with anyone else.

Saying that D&D was the #1 tabletop roleplaying game in 1995 is not a particularly significant statement.

Wait, you think I said Pathfinder is running alone?  Yeah, no.  I meant D&D, for all of the time up until Pathfinder, basically.  I have no idea how you thought I meant Pathfinder.

It's more true that Pathfinder didn't lose. 4E failed not because it was beaten by pathfinder, but rather because it turned a lot of gamers off.

That being said, 3E is a very flawed edition waiting for a worthy successor. Unfortunately 4E just wasn't that successor, but neither was PF really.

People want a better game, the main problem is that nobody is quite offering it yet. I feel like if they offered the balance of 4E without the 2 hour long combats, then 4E would have done really well. The main flaw of 4E is simply that it takes forever to finish a combat, and that's a huge flaw which turned so many people off.

Yep, I am still waiting for a proper 2nd Ed, which 5th Ed is shaping up to be, for me.

Howdy folks,

I'll be closing this thread now as it has degenerated into an edition war based on whether a given edition failed or not.  As an aside, calling any edition a failure is a form of baiting which is against the Code of Conduct.

Thanks.
