Most people can delude themselves into creating a protocol too difficult for they themselves to solve.   Doing so doesn't mean making an unbreakable protocol, just one _you_ can't break.

So, since im not a security expert, I'm not going to offer a full solution.  I don't think you can get a full solution (100% secure) without getting the stores help.

You could probably do better than either current solution by encoding your verification key with a hash of the isbn.   That way, if two people claim the same key, just ask them to take a photo of their book they purchased.   Make sure the resolution of the book is good enough to read the isbn, and no receipt required.   Admittedly, this would only stop thrives who picked up a book of someone who registered, and if there's collusion, it'd be a bit tricky to break that to the customers who were trying to break your system. (Somehow, you and X have submitted identical photos)

Another way could that the store owners give out a code with purchase of the book...or hell apply the code for you. It's not that hard to ship a bunch of stickers with codes on them with an order of books instead of having the stickers pre-stuck in the books...hell if the customer wants they can stick the code in the book afterwards.

I don't really care how its done as long as the customer isn't inconvienced and your not required to be online to use the program (obviously you would have to log in to your account to download the update)

That would work so long as they stay in business and/or sell the book in store. What happens then?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad solution. But it does have one giant hole.

My two copper.

Well if they go out of business the product is either liquidated, kept by the owner if its not sold off in the closing sale...so give the codes to the luquidator or keep the codes for him/herself.

Of course there is a chance it will get lost or something but honestly it really is only a minor consideration...I do welcome better ideas though...nothing that inconviences the consumer though

How about a DND Neverwinter game for 50 bucks. You get an offline game, a character builder, an offline game tracker for table top gaming and free updates.
You want to play online with others? Just add a10 buck a month mpg fee.

I won't pay for an online Character Builder (and don't now, though I'm still actively playing 4th Edition).

I DID pay for the offline Character Builder and continued to do so 'till they stopped supporting it.

Guess what I'll pay money for when Next is released...

I personally preferred the downloadable desktop client that was initially offered, but that's just me.

I actually think thats pretty much everyone...I see very few of these  around anymore...my worry is that the WOTC mucky mucks will tranlate that data as DDi is a bad idea and not clue in that the time when their numbers plummeted was shortly after the "oooo new shiny" syndrome wore off for the online builder so just won't do it.

I mean I can make character the normal way but the builder is one of the things that made it easy to change my group from 4 people to 10ish with an age range of 10-35 with so many new players I'm as much a teacher as I am the story teller.

Also whilst I can do it totally PnP I just don't have the time I did when I was back in High School so the builder allows me to sate my need to make multiple charcters just to try out a bunch of things

Reliance on the internet will inevitably increase, but even purely online tools should be engineered to maintain some of its functionality in the event of an interrupted connection. Really, I'd be fine with a browser app that connected to a database but maintained my history in a cache or something so I could access my characters without the net.

They might drop DDI for the reason you suggest, but that might not be a bad thing if they don't intend to add enough value to justify the price to the average customer. I have serious doubts that the tools associated with DDI will disappear though. The concern really is all the 4e tools that people have come to rely on and how available they will be after 5e goes official and things start retooling over to the new line. I hope they do the right thing and make the 4e tools available somehow; the OGL or something similar could be used. 4e customers don't deserve being left out in the cold after years of giving money up every month.

That's a lot of people. The amount of modding and invasive world building I do makes the use of standardised tools like DDI's character builder impossible; I'd love it if they could make the tools as moddable as the rules.

Thing is, I need value added. Giving me a convenience at the expense of functionality doesn't add value.
