My take is, players can't play anything that doesn't have a soul. Maybe in special situations, but every default player race should have a soul. If they wanna make elves an NPC race, then go ahead and take away their souls.

What difference does that make?  So you can't be brought back from the dead, big whoop.

Agreed.
At least in MERP, elves could die only through violence or a loss of will to live. So yeah, they are "immortal" yet killable. Also in MERP, Elves could still be ressurected, but it was harder for them than the other PC races.

Don't forget the elves as they were portrayed in Poul Anderson's stories (souless creatures of faerie). Anderson's Broken Sword and Three Hearts and Three Lions were major contributors to the way elves were portrayed in D&D.

Anyway, I don't think souless elves will be making an appearance in this or any future editions of D&D, at least not in any core capacity. Souless elves, much like the original Monk and Ranger classes, were peculiar to Greyhawk, and so were included (along with other oddities) despite their setting specific nature.

I mean, Monks (in their original wonky form) were eventually (or originally) represented as Scarlet Brotherhood operatives, while magic-using Rangers (which stuck around, oddly enough) were basically Rangers of the Gnarley Forest. They had organizations in place to explain how they came into their odd array of powers, while anyone not running Greyhawk was left with "Uh, well, I guess your woodsman can cast magic missile now. Whatever."

The fewer assumptions placed on races or classes, the better. Afterall, it seems that most folks are more interested in D&D as a universal fantasy system/engine (a la GURPS or BRP) than D&D as a larger combined setting and cosmology (a la Planescape and AD&D 2nd edition). Not sure how I feel about that, but there you have it.

I cannot agree with this more.

I respect Gary Gygax a lot, but I'm in favor of all of the basic PC races having souls. It might be good in mythology and literature, but in a game it won't really work to flat-out say that humans are special and the gods like them better.

I agree with Kyrion here.

I much prefer Elves to have souls and be subject to Resurection, just like all other races.

I agree with Plaguescarred. I think Elves have souls.

I think that it is unfairly human-centric and speciesist to say that nonhuman races wouldn't have souls.
