Whether or not anybody has souls is the kind of fluff that should stick to setting books and stay out of the core mechanics.

Fixed that for you.

Agreed. Setting thing. But I've never heard of that.

It's been SOP in my games for about a decade.

Well, all race features are really just setting fluff.  As such I don't mind if there are some very distinguishing features between races.

My take is, players can't play anything that doesn't have a soul. Maybe in special situations, but every default player race should have a soul. If they wanna make elves an NPC race, then go ahead and take away their souls.

So you would say Mozart, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Bach, Elvis Presley, and Miles Davis are irrelevant?

Well, maybe just their opinions.
Especially since they can't give them, what with being dead and all (well, except for Elvis- he's still alive)

You mean therorerical approaches to music or D&D, or, both?

Neither and none.
I was pointing out the error of saying those people are irrelevant when all that was said in the first post was that an opinion was irrelevant, not the actual person, per se.

At any rate, any reasonable, intelligent person should clearly see the importance and relevance of works, even if the author is deceased.

I suppose no one will care that Gary Gygax's game design career did not end with D&D, and his opinions on some things did, in fact, change.

Both Dangerous Journeys and Legendary Adventures were heavily skill based. Legendary adventures did not use a class system.

Given that these games are such a radical departure in design from D&D, I would say that it is fair to surmise that Gary's opinion on whether elves have souls or not might have changed over time, as well. Unless someone asks him and manages to get an answer, we'll never know.

Starting with 3e it is policy to bash all previous editions of the game as "broken" and "beyond repair". WotC has activly encoutraged their fanbase to do this with their constant mantra of how bad all previous editions were (Even if they were published 3 months prior). The wholesale rejection of the past even if it was recent is kind of a side effect of what they started.

What difference does that make?  So you can't be brought back from the dead, big whoop.
