I like con's role in HP just fine as it is. What my group does is we limit the minimum by taking the top half of the die, so a figher will roll 1d5+5+con each level and a wizard will roll 1d2+2+con.


Works fine for us.

I think Con will continue to work fine as long as everybody takes Con12-17.  Even if you have extremes in the same group it only becomes problematic at higher levels e.g. 10+.  But the problem is still lurking.
