Hello there. I frankly don't have too much experience with older D&D rules, having only played the video games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights until recently.


I don't see any mention in the packet of whether or not magic bows firing normal arrows count against monsters who have resistance to nonmagical weapons. I remember in baldur's gate that the ammunition was more important than the bow, but I am not sure if that is true for the official 2nd edition rules and whether that has changed in 3rd edition and 4th edition. 

Doing half damage will obviously change the difficulty of the encounter significantly so I wanted to get an idea ahead of time what the rules for 3rd and 4th edition are and see what makes sense for Next.

As of 3.0 (may have been 3.5, can't remember), magical bows confer their effects to the ammunition they fire, unless the properties on the ammunition are more significant than the bow's, iirc.

Though, it doesn't appear as though they have magical ammunition yet, so I would just go with the idea that magical bows confer their properties/bonuses to the normal ammunition, which includes the ability to overcome magical resistance.

Thanks for responding. After reading some forum posts it seems like in 3.0 you needed magic ammunition to get past damage reduction, and in 3.5 they made the bow's enhancement bonus count for damage reduction purposes. I would assume 4th and DnD next would carry on this change because it is simpler and allows you to ignore ammunition entirely.
