Can you come up with what the essence of D&D is to you in color or texture? Read the article, think about it, and perhaps add your own voice to the discussion!

as background for the cover maybe somthing that looks like faded leather of a old leather bound tome.

and the deluxe edition later down the line would have real leather

Here's me swatch: horse leather, limestone cavern walls, and the Blackadder and Century Gothic fonts for headings and rules text, respectively.  Someone in the article comments also posted some green scales and I think that was wonderfully evocative as well.

Nice scales Wrecan!

I'll provide some samples later on but in a general sense...

Textures: Scales, Polished Black Iron, Rusting Steel, Slate Stone, Heavy (Unusual) Leathers, Claws
Fonts: Heavy-weight "rough" serif character sets, Cold Mountain, others I'll get to later
Colours: Black and Gold, Black and Green, Dark Red and Gold...

D&D Colors

Hot colors - physicality
• Metallic gold - treasure, danger, hard won wealth
• Fire orange - taverns, caverns, fireballs
• Blood red - martial combat

Cool colors - mysticism
• Emerald green - primal life energy, evergreen forest
• Lapis lazuli blue - mystic soul, celestial sphere
• Amethyst purple - arcane magic, royal purpura dye
• Silk white - international trade, mithril silk shirt armor

The emerald-and-gold dragon scale armor by Cerebro1974 and Wrecan above, is awesome.

This image by another forumer, imutcheck, is awesome:

Note: gleaming golds (lights on darks), firey hot colors (lights on darks), mystic cool emerald, goldish white stone, and badass black leather.

This is D&D to me:
hand-drawn map
Some kid with a pencil and some graph paper.  Sure, you can make it prettier:

Or add color or whatnot.  But when I see those classic lines on the graph paper, it's the most evocative thing I can imagine.  I wanna' explore.
