I think you'll find if they start dying, they'll change. There really is no reason for them to be so selfish. 4e is dependent on working as a team.
Thanks for the opinion, and I see what you're saying, but the group I play with is composed of close friends I've known for 15+ years. I have no desire to let another player's character die just to prove a point. That's not how we play. And also, it's not like we don't ever work together. We do. We can focus-fire well, and we generally plan our turns cohesively. It's just that the unusual composition of the party has presented more challenges to me, as the sole non-striker, than I initially thought. I guess what I'm saying is that I should have foreseen that a radiant cleric wasn't the optimal solution earlier.

Sorry for the double post but I love how much we're talking about OAs. When is the LAST late paragon game you guys played where the monsters provoked on a usual basis?
Completely irrelevant, because it ignores the party comp. You ask that question without asking the companion question: When is the LAST late paragon game you guys played in where the monsters could provoke on a usual basis without getting their heads handed to them?
No, its not at all. By high paragon the number of shifts, teleport speeds, bursts, blasts, and more basically mean that in a well designed encounter, monsters don't NEED to provoke. My question was 100% valid.

I have been trying to build a decent Dizzying Mace character purely for my own amusement for a while now.
"Headspin". the googles should help.

The advantage of Avenging Spirit is not that your friends' PCs will actually die. Just when they get dropped to 0, you get more powerful. As a Warchanter, they'll benefit a lot from you spending an action point. Half-Elf is definitely better if you think you can convince them to give you their action points so you can spend multiple action points in a combat while they get off free attacks. Via Sidhe Lord.
They don't get dropped, then it likely isn't a problem.

Half-elf can do everything a human Valor Bard can do, better. I don't even understand your train of logic.

Thanks for that. The Fighter|Cleric variant looks interesting.

I'm getting that sense from most of the replies. But honestly, there has been so much useful information posted that I'm going to have to chew on this a bit more. And I don't hate warlords, so playing one wouldn't be a problem.

Half-elf can do everything a human Valor Bard can do, better. I don't even understand your train of logic.
You have an extra feat which in practical play is worth a lot. If you're MC'ing to Warlord, you're swapping for Hail of Steel, which means needing to hit with it. i.e. Combat Virtuoso.
Human's +4 on a miss is very useful for making sure you land Hail of Steel, something Half-Elves don't get. And because you spent an Action Point, your friends do a lot of damage, even if there's only 3 of 'em doing regular attacks.
And that's not taking into account how many feats you can have going in a Bard build based on weird multi-classing - Hero's Poise + Starfire Womb can equal your party basically auto-saving against anything as an example. Superior Will, Improved Initiative, Blade Initiate(so dagger = implement), etc...
