At 9th level, a fighter would become a lord and get a keep and would automatically attract followers.
Ever try and stuff those in to a dungeon... ever see any premade adventures designed to incorporate those? (honest question I didnt purchase those).

@Brightmantle: actually the clones were in time stasis until the spellcaster died and then contingency spells actiovated casting dispel magic on the time stasis.

Yes, lots of 1e modules were designed with the assumption that PCs would either attract or hire followers/hirelings. But 2e downplayed it some, and it was all but absent in 3e and wasn't even mentioned in 4e.
My two copper.

. But when one plays with a disregard for the guidlines it's not the systems fault.
Not playing at all levels of play so everyone can feel lame or a henchmen for large periods of time... is playing without regards to the guidelines... I suppose. Not playing 4 to 5 battles a day is not playing without reguards to the guidelines I suppose...

Well, not everyone thought high level play in 2nd ed should be about adventuring, the game kind of suggested a new style of paly, ruling kingdoms, guilds, churches, going to war and what not.
Added: I`ll find my High-Level Campaigns rulebook and do a bit of research before I say any more.

As I have written in the past a high level 2nd ed. fighter with death blow from High level campaigns can kill a mage with one shot via a failed save at what we know as a d.c. of 14 or less on a d20- the mage insta dead. Ring of teleportation, hack & save or dead. Fighters in AD&D played according to the rules were not weak. They had the best a.c. best Thaco- Bab, most attacks, exceptional str. and Con. Nearly the best h.p. and dealt the most damage, winning fights by attricion if not by way of manuevers. They attracted mid level followers, carved out kingdoms and lead parties on to become demi Gods at high level. A fighter ( properly played)was a major force to be reckoned with.

And congrats your D.M. has a new NPC. and when the first clone awakes he goes and slays the others. Face it your D.M. was wrong.

Gygax was a wargamer... didnt mean people wanted to not adventure and pretent they were a general. At high level CuCulain/Beowulf still fights the Dragon. (I didnt play 2e or even have any of the expansions to 1e back in the day).

For reference see Page 150 second paragraph, see adjusted saving throws by character level as well.
