So I'm looking to get a new computer, but I'm not the most tech-savy of squirrels. It needs to be a laptop because I need to carry it around with me when I go from one lab to another. Because I have to carry it from place to place, while also carrying books and other materials, I want it to be light. I don't want anything more than 4.5 lbs. I need to do statistical data analysis, which will be done with either SPSS or SAS or both and R. I'll also need to create reports and presentations. More than likely it'll be Microsoft Word or PowerPoint I'll be using for that. I'm not going to be playing video games on it. I rarely play games as it is. I may need to edit videos on it from time to time.

So I don't really care if it is a PC or a Mac. I can get Office and the statistical programs for either. I'll be getting it at Bestbuy because, well, I'm lazy, and I don't want to look for any other store to go to. I have one fairly close by, and it would make it much easier for me to just go there and get it.

So any of you tech-savy OTTers have any good suggestions on what to get?

Yes, go to bestbuy and tell the guy what you told us. Just have price range in your head.

It's not like you need anything specific or super performant. And your thinking of keeping it for what, two years maybe? Computers on the market today will serve that purpose for you. So it really a question of price.

Maybe battery life is a concern and you should ask the guy about that.

Since it sounds like you wont be doing anything intensive such as gaming or rendering then just get whatever is in your price range.

Why would you expect a serious, helpful answer?
Especially since you like to clown, demean, belittle, and tease people?

No really, what makes you think you deserve any respect? You don't give any, so how come you wants it all?

I did. They have no clue what SPSS, SAS, and R are. One of them was trying to sell me a Sony Vaio that seemed to be set up for gaming and video editing or something, for liky $1K.

Battery life and weight. I want something light weight. I'm going to be carrying it around along with books and other materials I'll be using.

Honestly my Acer which is pretty old at this point (I think it's 3 years old?) would work for you.

I'd send it to you, but I have car tuning software loaded up on it that I use enough to justify having the laptop

That is what you get for going to bestbuy.

You shouldn't be paying more than 500$ for it. Unless you get a Mac.

Go to a Mac store, you'll get people who answer you questions and they have light computers and great batteries.

Won't I end up paying like three times as much for a mac? Are they really worth it?

Not for the use you want. Why not go at a futureshop or a small local computer store? You shouldn't be paying more than 500$ for this and it shouldn't be hard to find.

I bought a compaq 4 years ago for 500$. Still doing great, only need a new battery. There it's settle. You owe me 300$.
