Or, maybe they will call it D&D Next. You know, the name of the darn thing is D&D Next after all.

"The Dungeons and Dragons formerly known as 5th Edition"
Has about as much pretentiousness as implying that this edition will be all the DnD people will need from here unto the end of time which is what Mearls was doing.

From the words of Stephen Radney-Macfarland-
'...there was one game to rule them all, one game to find them, one game to bring them all and in the dark basements bind them'.
My favorite edition was killed for this edition's inane goal to unite the fan base. I imagine that I'm not the only 4th fan who hopes that D&D Next fails...

It's just how can you expect your vision of DnD to be so definitive take, you have to look at it logically there has been DnD before you and there will be after you let's not kid ourselves it's like"640K ought to be enough for anybody." except worse imho.

I thought there was an unwritten rule that all 5ths had to be called "Underground".

Maybe if D&D wasn't so close to the mainstream >.> It's not hipster enough to be underground (But, Mearl's premise is pretentious enough to be labeled hipster, lol)

Imagine a world where the first-time D&D player rolls stats, picks a race, picks a class, picks an alignment, and buys gear to create a character. Imagine if an experienced player, maybe the person helping our theoretical player learn the ropes, could also make a character by rolling ability scores and picking a race, class, feat, skills, class features, spells or powers, and so on. Those two players used different paths to build characters, but the system design allows them to play at the same table. -Mearl
