I'm not sure if this has been said before, but would getting the specialty feats in addition to a characters chosen feat at the given level be a bad thing? to me, a lot of those feats are ones id never take because you only ever recieve four.

No, if you really understand it, then you can explain it yourself.

Speaking of things that were badly designed, please check out this thread for my Minotaur fix. What have the critics said, you ask?
"If any of my players ask to play a Minotaur, I'm definitely offering this as an alternative to the official version." - EmpactWB
"If I ever feel like playing a Minotaur I'll know where to look!" - Undrave
"WoTC if you are reading this - please take this guy's advice." - Ferol_Debtor_of_Torm
"Really full of win. A minotaur that is actually attractive for more than just melee classes." - Cpt_Micha

Also, check out my recent GENASI variant! If you've ever wished that your Fire Genasi could actually set stuff on fire, your Water Genasi could actually swim, or your Wind Genasi could at least glide, then look no further.

Finally, check out my OPTIONS FOR EVERYONE article, an effort to give unique support to the races that WotC keeps forgetting about. Includes new racial feature options for the Changeling, Deva, Githzerai, Gnoll, Gnome, Goliath, Half-Orc, Kalashtar, Minotaur, Shadar-Kai, Thri-Kreen, Warforged and more!

I think some sort of 'Theme-power/feat' akin to what was in 4e would be appropriate. A bonus maneuver/spell/ritual at first level or something would seem apt to me.

As it is, Specialties are completely indistinguishable to me from the 'suggested feats' of previous editions, which just about everyone flatly ignored. I'd also like for Specialties to go all the way through level 20 OR for them to allow you a second Specialty at level 11 (functionally the same thing), as it is, I'm finding it hard to create the sort of multi-faceted characters I tend to play in DnD.

EX: in 4e, with a minor amount of tweaking, I had a Hunter Ranger/Shadowy Rogue Multi-classed into Wizard with the Veiled Alliance Theme, and an animal companion in place of one of his 'big 3' magic items. This is a typical character for me, I love multi-classing and taking a few dips here and there to reflect minor leitmotifs about a character's background, race, culture, etc.

By the end of 4e, even using the CB, it was taking a long time to pick feats, for both the optimizers and casual gamers in our group.

Agreed. By far the worse part of the character creation and leveling process in 4E.

Pre-requisites should die in  a fire.

Improvisation in 4e: Improv. Attacks(by wrecan) - Fave 4E Improvisations

The Non-combatant Adventurer

Reality is unrealistic - and even monkeys protest unfairness

Dynamic Reflavoring : The Fighter : The Wizard : The Swordmage
Creative Character Collection - Featuring:The Faerie Master - Snow White - Joxer - Ironman - Elric - Bloodwright

By virtue of being a player your characters are the protagonists in a heroic fantasy game even at level one

"You have to explicitly give non-casters permission to do awesome, where as with magic it is just assumed they can." -Garthanos

Or, just pick one anyway, instead of taking the specialty-feat.

Specialties as suggestion really is the best model.

Conversation is a two way street.  Understanding is a one way street.  We have already discovered through this and other various threads that conversation is not the best way for the two of us to communicate.

"Go read a book." is not a conversation. It is intellectually condescending trolling.
