trebor_rjf my ink jet costs less than 10 cents a page and college costs me 15 cents a page. So I loose roughly 8 cents per page by going to campus to print it out.
I would assume toner is equally expensive in New Zealand at the same ratio ink and paper is. (if that isn't the case than he should look into it

However I'm the DM for my group and more importantly I also live in the real world. I live in New Zealand and the cost of computer ink here is close to $100 USD for a new ink cartridge. I was looking forward to playing D&DN this weekend and went to print out the beastiary. Its 95 pages long.
1, drop the quality down as far as it goes. This will save a bunch of ink. 2, only copy monster pages you know you'll need or copy/paste what you need into a document file and print that out. You can save a lot of space/ink by changing the format and dropping the font size.

Still going to be around the forums and wait fora bit. I might playtest it later but my players have the following opinions.
1. Rogue player. Enthusiastic she want to play a rogue alot. 2. Fighter player. Disappointed with dead levels, prefers 3rd ed fighter rolled up a second ed fighter today with 18/71 strength. 3. Wizard. Doesn't really care. Will ahppi9ly play D&DN/PF/2nd ed. 4. Mr Random. Play whatever, enjoys random stuff like getting hit with his own magic missiles. IDK.
All of them are enthusiastic about trying out 2nd ed ATM as a break from years of 3.XYZ. Probably going to rewrite parts of Pathfinder (nerfin spell DCs, power attack and rapid shot in particular).
Reducing a character to a list of dice rolls and modifiers is not role playing*

We played 2e levels 1-3 recently and both 4e and 5e are a definite improvement on the low level limitations of that edition. However, it had a simplistic charm. I think the simplified base 5e game will still have more to offer than 2e.
I do agree though that dead levels are a problem. A system akin to 4e themes where your traits improve or you get background related benefits might be good. I heard that higher levels may be padded out with legacy/prestige benefits which may fill in some blanks.
I think they system looks a little damage heavy compared to monster hit points and I'm still not happy that the full stat bonus gets added to attack rolls but otherwise I'm not unhappy at how 5e is shaping up.
Re-printing stuff is indeed an expensive pain but it's the price we pay for being involved in a playtest. We can't be too ungrateful!

F-111 Interdictor Long (200+ squares) distance ally teleporter. With some warlord stuff. Broken in a plot way, not a power way. Thought Switch Higher level build that grants upto 14 attacks on turn 1. If your allies play along, it's broken. Elven Critters Crit op with crit generation. 5 of these will end anything. Broken. King Fisher Does an excellent job at keeping an enemy disabled in a few ways. Strong. Boominator Fun catch-22 booming blade build with either strong or completely broken damage depending on your reading. Very Distracting Warlock Lot's of dazing and major penalties to hit. Overpowered. Pocket Protector Pixie Stealth Knight. Maximizing the defender's aura by being in an ally's/enemy's square. Yakuza NinjIntimiAdin: Perma-stealth Striker that offers a little protection for ally's, and can intimidate bloodied enemies. Very Strong. Chargeburgler with cheese Ranged attacks at the end of a charge along with perma-stealth. Solid, could be overpowered if tweaked. Void Defender Defends giving a penalty to hit anyone but him, then removing himself from play. Can get somewhat broken in epic. Scry and Die Attacking from around corners, while staying hidden. Moderate to broken, depending on the situation. Skimisher Fly in, attack, and fly away. Also prevents enemies from coming close. Moderate to Broken depending on the enemy, but shouldn't make the game un-fun, as the rest of your team is at risk, and you have enough weaknesses. Indestructible Simply won't die, even if you sleep though combat. Sir Robin (Bravely Charge Away) He automatically slows and pushes an enemy (5 squares), while charging away. Hard to rate it's power level, since it's terrain dependent. Death's Gatekeeper A fun twist on a healic, making your party "unkillable". Overpowered to Broken, but shouldn't actually make the game un-fun, just TPK proof. Death's Gatekeeper mk2, (Stealth Edition) Make your party "unkillable", and you hidden, while doing solid damage. Stronger then the above, but also easier for a DM to shut down. Broken, until your DM get's enough of it. Domination and Death Dominate everything then kill them quickly. Only works @ 30, but is broken multiple ways. Battlemind Mc Prone-Daze Protecting your allies by keeping enemies away. Quite powerful. The Retaliator Getting hit deals more damage to the enemy then you receive yourself, and you can take plenty of hits. Heavy item dependency, Broken. Dead Kobold Transit Teleports 98 squares a turn, and can bring someone along for the ride. Not fully built, so i can't judge the power Psilent Guardian Protect your allies, while being invisible. Overpowered, possibly broken Unnamed Avenger|Runepriest/Hammer of Vengance Do lot's of damage while boosting your teams. Strong to slightly overpowered. Charedent BarrageA charging ardent. Fine in a normal team, overpowered if there are 2 together, and easily broken in teams of 5. Super Knight A tough, sticky, high damage knight. Strong. Super Duper Knight Basically the same as super knight, only far more broken. Mora, the unkillable avenger Solid damage, while being neigh indestuctable. Overpowered, but not broken. Swordburst Maximus At-Will Close Burst 3 that slide and prones. Protects allies with off actions. Strong, possibly over powered with the right party.

For now.
When you decide to playtest again, get your PCs to print copies of things out for you. Everyone is broke in college and it sucks.

Wait. One of the reasons you don't want to play Next is that you and one of your players are dissapointed about dead levels and your solution is to play 2e? Doesn't 2e define dead levels?
